Benchmarks and Retention

After your admission into the MCE Program, there remains key checkpoints (called “Benchmarks”) by which you must have maintained a certain grade point average, passed prerequisite coursework, completed specific “key assessments”, and maintained satisfactory dispositions. Failure to meet any of these criteria will prevent you from progressing in the MCE Program. There are 4 such Benchmarks and the details of each are outlined below:

Benchmark 1 – Entrance to Program

  • 2.75 GPA in Miami Plan course
  • Praxis 1/SAT/ACT
  • Statement of Good Moral Character
  • Candidate Recognition of Dispositions

Benchmark 2 – Pre-Student Teaching / Internship

  • 2.5 GPA in content areas and cumulative
  • Successful completion of Early Field Block courses – EDT246M, EDT252M and EDL318M
    • Assessment 2A-Successful completion of Field Experience
    • Assessment 6A-Successful completion of Curriculum Project
  • Dispositions Review
  • Successful completion of 3 content courses in each content area
  • Successful completion of Content Integration Block courses – EDT441 (Science), EDT436(Language Arts), EDT439 (Social Studies), EDT429M (Mathematics), EDT346M (Reading), EDT421M (Classroom Management) and EDP301M (Assessment)
    • Assessment 1 – OAE – 2 Content Areas (Qualifying score for all content areas 220)
    • Assessment 2A – Successful completion of Field Experience
    • Assessment 3A – Successful completion of Integrated Unit Plan
    • Assessment 7A – Membership in Professional Organization
  • Successful completion of 20 hours of IPDP
  • Dispositions Review

Benchmark 3 – Student Teaching / Internship

  • 2.5 GPA in content areas and cumulative
  • Successful completion of EDT419 – Supervised Student Teaching
    • Assessment 4 – Successful completion of Student Teaching Site Evaluation Form
  • Successful completion of University Supervisor’s Midterm and/or Final Assessment
  • Dispositions Review
  • Successful completion of edTPA

Benchmark 4 – Exit From Program

  • 2.5 GPA in content areas and cumulative
  • Dispositions Review
  • Passing of OAE – Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Middle Childhood (Qualifying score 220)
  • Completion of all course requirements (including EDT442M and EDT448M)
