Teaching of Reading Requirement

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) requires a minimum of 12 semester hours of reading coursework (9 semester hours in the teaching of reading and 3 semester hours in the teaching of phonics) to earn a Intervention Specialist license. Please consult your program plan of study to confirm which (if any) reading elective courses you need to satisfy the reading requirement. Like EDT 642 (offered this spring), EDT 646 will be offered in the SEOH program format this summer. Alternate courses may be taken in other formats from Miami or other CAEP accredited institutions with prior approval.

Licensure Assessments

The state of Ohio recognizes that high-quality teachers are developed through high-quality educator preparation programs. Program students are assessed for program continuation via specific academic performance, content standards, and professional dispositions. More information about the assessments, including preparation and test center locations may be found on our Licensure Resource page.

Best Buddies Concert

Best Buddies is a student organization that fosters one-on-one friendships with college students and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization is excited to host an awareness week on campus March 5th-March 9th. The first event is a concert held Monday, March 5th from 7-9PM in Hall Auditorium. The Best Buddies Friends Choir will be singing, along with 5 other Miami a capella groups. Miami's Best Buddies chapter is also bringing to campus ReVoiced, a group who promotes inclusiveness and has been extremely involved in Best Buddies.

Teacher Job Fair 2018

There are many employment-related events this month culminating with the March 28 Teacher Job Fair. More than 50 entities will be in attendance - the majority of which are hiring special educators! Attendees will meet with school system representatives and interview with those for whom there is mutual interest. The fair is open to Miami University undergraduates, graduates and alumni of the College of Education, Health & Society. For additional information and job fair preparation, visit our SEOH news post from last month.

Career events and workshops are organized by Miami's Center for Career Exploration & Success. Job seekers may also wish to check out the Greater Cincinnati School Application Consortium for regional postings.
