Scholarships and Grants for Graduate Students

Scholarships are a type of Gift Aid that are typically based on merit, such as academic excellence, talent, affiliation with various groups, career aspirations, or a combination of merit and financial need. To receive scholarships awarded by Miami University, you must enroll full time.

Grants are financial aid awards that typically do not need to be repaid. Because these awards vary with each area of study, please check with the Graduate School or your program for specific information.

Ohio TEAM Scholarship

In partnership with Ohio’s K–12 educators and in recognition of the important contribution they provide to the citizens of our state, Miami University offers the Ohio Teacher Education Access at Miami (TEAM) Scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the student must be an educator who is a full-time teacher or administrator in an Ohio school, holds a professional license or certificate issued by the State of Ohio, is a resident of Ohio, and the degree or course being taken must be part of the educator's approved professional development plan when applicable.

The College of Education, Health, and Society offers a number of graduate programs, certificates, endorsements, and other professional development opportunities.

Be advised that students eligible for the Staff Waiver cannot also utilize the TEAM Scholarship.

If you would like to take graduate-level courses but do not intend to pursue a graduate degree, you can apply for admission using “continuing non-degree graduate” status. After you are admitted, you can earn an unlimited number of graduate hours within an indefinite period of time. 

NOTE: Students enrolled in the following Market Driven Tuition programs are not eligible for the TEAM scholarship:

  • Master of Social Work
  • Master of Science in Business Analytics

  • Project Dragonfly (MAT in Biological Sciences; MA in Biology with AIP or GFP tracks and Web)

Scholarship Amount

This scholarship significantly lowers the cost of professional development and/or earning a graduate degree by providing a 25% reduction in the instructional and general fees.

Application Process

The College of Education, Health, and Society (EHS) processes TEAM Scholarship applications. For questions about the application process, contact EHS at 513-529-6421.

To receive this scholarship, you must complete the application process, be accepted to the Graduate School, and accept your offer. This is required of all full- and part-time students, including those enrolling only for workshop credits.

When submitting your TEAM Scholarship application, you must include a copy of your Ohio teaching license or certificate and with proof of employment for the academic year in which you are applying. Acceptable evidence includes a teaching contract or an official letter from your employer.

Renewal Requirements

Your TEAM Scholarship is good for one academic year, fall semester through summer term. TEAM Scholarship applications must be submitted before your first day of enrollment each academic year.

Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

The TEACH Grant is a federal program that awards up to $4,000 per year to students who agree to serve as full-time teachers in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the TEACH Grant is determined by the following: 
  • U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens (based on federally determined guidelines)
  • Individuals enrolled as an undergraduates, post-baccalaureates, or graduate students in a postsecondary educational institution
  • Students who scored above the 75th percentile on a college admission test (ACT/SAT/GRE) or who maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25
  • Students who complete the required TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling and a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve or Repay (Agreement).
  • Students must be enrolled in a TEACH grant eligible major:

Scholarship Amount

The award amount is subject to change based on federal sequestration. The annual statutory amount is as follows:

  • Full-time student (12+ credit hours): $4,000
  • Three-quarter-time student (9-11 credit hours): $3,000
  • Half-time student (6-8 credit hours): $2,000
  • Less-than-half-time student (5 or fewer credit hours): $1,00

Scholarship Adjustments

Scholarships covering tuition and fees may be reduced if you receive additional aid that covers the same charges or if your total funding exceeds your cost of attendance. This includes resources such as the Miami University Staff/Family Fee Waiver, Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG), War Orphans Scholarship, Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, Ohio National Guard benefits, ROTC awards, Miami Access Fellows, and others. In these cases, your scholarship may be adjusted to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional funding guidelines.
