Data Sources, Workshops, Coaching

As a student team, you can prepare for DataFest using a variety of open data sources, including:

CADS will be hosting a series of workshops this spring semester. Sessions will be held in a classroom-style setting. Please note: students should bring their own laptops to the workshops.

Session 1: Managing Large Datasets and Data Visualization in R

In-person meeting: Tuesday, February 27th 6:00-7:00 PM, Upham 316
Led by: Dr. Karsten Maurer, Department of Statistics

This session will cover the use of the data.table and dplyr packages in R for loading and working with a large dataset in R. This session will also cover the use of the ggplot2 and GGally packages in R for quick and simple exploratory plot making. Students will not get into advanced graphics, but this session will lay foundations for a plotting system that can extend to high-end, static and interactive graphics. At the end of this session, students will be given a large dataset to work with before the next workshop.

Session 2: Practice DataFest and Presentation Skills

In-person meeting: Thursday, February 29th 6:00-7:00 PM, FSB 237
Led by: Dr. Tom Fisher, Department of Statistics & Ms. Debbie Coleman, Department of Marketing

During this session, students will have the opportunity to present insights they have learned through working with the data provided by the previous workshop. Students will brainstorm ideas about how to approach DataFest scenarios. This session will also cover the necessary skills for presenting insights at DataFest. Students will learn how to tell a story with their data, using a marketing approach to an audience, faculty, and a panel of judges. Telling a strong story has been a key to previous DataFest success.
