Faculty Events & Services

The Howe Center for Writing Excellence provides workshops and informal gatherings throughout the year to help faculty use writing in the classroom to teach course concepts and disciplinary writing practices. Our secondary mission is to foster a writing culture at Miami and to that end we offer various services to support faculty's own writing and scholarship, including our popular writing retreats and Friday morning writing hours.

Support for Teaching with Writing

We offer several research-based workshops each semester on topics related to effective use of writing in the classroom to teach both content and disciplinary writing practices. We also provide opportunities for faculty to learn from each other at informal lunch events.

Workshops and Lunches

  • Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Workshops provide support for the teaching of writing in your courses and across courses in your program. All workshops are held in King 133 unless noted. Join us for our spring WAC workshops on responding to student writing and teaching writing effectively online.
  • Lunch Series events provide the opportunity to share your teaching experiences and learn from other faculty and HCWE staff. We offer both working lunches where you can bring course materials for feedback and discussion, as well as effective practice lunches at which guest faculty who teach writing intensive courses share some of their assignments and activities, with lots of time for Q&A.

Support for Faculty Writing

The Howe Center for Writing Excellence seeks to support a writing culture among Miami faculty and to support them as they write and publish. Although our primary mission is to support the teaching and learning of writing, this work is supported by faculty who understand themselves as working (and struggling) writers, too.
