Freedom Summer Walking Tours Oct. 10-26

The next Freedom Summer Walking Tour will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. The tour begins on Miami’s Western campus in front of Clawson Hall on Western Drive and ends at the Freedom Summer Memorial near Kumler Chapel.

The 45-minute interactive tour draws upon the oral histories, letters and diaries of 1964 Freedom Summer student volunteers who trained to register voters and teach in Freedom Schools in Mississippi.

Other tours scheduled in October:

4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18

5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19

4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25

4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26

No reservations are needed for the tours – simply show up in front of Clawson Hall.

Tour arrangements can be made for classes and groups at alternate dates and times before Nov. 1.   Email freedomsummerwalk@miamioh.edu for more information.   

The tours are co-sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures and the Western program.

The 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project will be celebrated with a national conference at Miami in Oct. 2014.
