Miami students participate in study abroad.

Miami continues to work toward developing more opportunities for students to study abroad.

Miami University ranks No. 2 nationwide among public doctoral universities for undergraduate student participation in study abroad programs.
The results of the just-released Open Doors 2014 report by the Institute of International Education are based on figures from the 2012-2013 academic year.

Miami also ranks No. 25 nationwide among all universities for total number of students, both undergraduate and graduate, for study abroad participation. About 38 percent of Miami undergraduate students study abroad by the time they graduate, with the majority studying abroad during their junior year.

"Our national rankings for study abroad are a testament to the value placed on international education at Miami," said Karla Guinigundo, associate director for Global Initiatives.

Miami continues its goal to increase the number of Miami students going abroad through expansion of faculty-led programs. Last year the university added a new winter term, which provides for additional opportunities.

“We also are focusing on recruitment of students under-represented in study abroad and raising new funds to provide a higher level of financial assistance to students who need it most," she added.

Top destinations for Miami students include Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and China. The majority of students go abroad on one of Miami’s faculty-led programs. Of the 1,687 students who studied abroad during the 2012-2013 academic year, 1,231 were in Miami programs.

Unique to Miami is the operation of a campus in Luxembourg. Last year 258 students studied at the Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center (MUDEC) in Luxembourg.

In addition to the Luxembourg campus, Miami students can apply their scholarships and federal financial aid to sponsored, exchanged or co-sponsored programs with other, non-Miami semester study-abroad providers.

Miami offers more than 350 co-sponsored programs that permit scholarship transfer, and airfare grants are available to students with financial need. Miami’s study abroad options are administered through the study abroad office in Miami’s Global Initiatives office.
