photo of two faculty at deskThe Public Health major is unique at Miami in that it is housed in both the College of Education, Health and Society (CEHS) and the College of Arts and Science (CAS).

Students choosing a concentration in either Public Health Promotion or Behavioral Public Health will complete all of the requirements of the College of Education, Health and Society.

Students choosing a concentration in Human Disease and Epidemiology or Health Policy and Administration will complete all of the requirements of the College of Arts and Science.

Core Curriculum (required for all concentrations)

The core curriculum is typically completed during the student's first and second years.

To major in Public Health, a student must complete 21-22 semester hours distributed as follows:

  • KNH125 or MBI131 - Introduction to Public Health or Community Health Perspectives (3 hours)
  • MBI361 - Epidemiology (3 hours)
  • IES/KNH 441 - Environmental Public Health (3 hours)
  • KNH321 or GTY365 - National and Global Health Policy or Social Policy & Programs in Gerontology (3 hours)
  • KNH218 - Applied Health Behavior Change (3 hours)
  • KNH221 - Social Marketing in Public Health (3 hours)
  • STA261 or STA301 - Statistics or Applied Statistics (4 or 3 hours)

Concentrations

The concentration requirements are typically completed during the student's 3rd and 4th years.

Human Disease & Epidemiology

This concentration utilizes basic concepts in biology and focuses on the factors that cause illness and promote health in human populations. This concentration explores differences in health across time and population subgroups as well as the reasons for those differences.

Health Policy & Administration

This concentration focuses on critical policy and programmatic issues in public health. The emphasis of this concentration is to examine how public policy impacts the public health delivery system and how administrators work to develop and implement programs in the field of public health.

Public Health Promotion

This concentration examines the principles and practices of health promotion to address current and emerging public health problems. The focus of the concentration is on the development of public health education prevention strategies across the lifespan.

Behavioral Public Health

This concentration provides a population and systems examination of the linkage between public health and mental health issues with an emphasis on multiple dimensions of health. This concentration explores the psychological and behavioral processes in health, illness, and health care.
