Assessment of Co-Curriculum & Other Academic Units

Assessment of Co-Curriculum & Other Academic Units

All units in the Division of Student Life and academic support units are required to create and submit assessment reports annually using a University template.  Beginning in 2024, centers and institutes are required to create and submit annual assessment reports using the University template.

Reports must include goals as well as metrics that are aligned with the unit’s mission and vision.  They also articulate a summary of key action steps taken in the past year as well as goals and plans for the upcoming year.

Student Life Units include: Armstrong Student Center, Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion, Community Standards, Dean of Students Office, Parent & Family Programs, Residence Life, Student Engagement & Activities, and the Rinella Learning Center

Academic Support Units include: Academic Advising & UNV 101, Global Initiatives, Honors College, Miami Online, Office of Exploratory Studies, Office of Research for Undergraduates, and University Libraries.

A list of centers and institutes can be found on this webpage

Each year, the Office of the Vice President for Student Life provides feedback on Student Life assessment reports, and the Office of the Provost provides feedback on all other assessment reports. The Office of the Provost maintains a repository of plans and reports.

Units that offer co-curricular programs embed in their assessment activity assessment of learning outcomes.  Miami University defines co-curricular activities as those that enhance learning and specifically provide further exploration of academic knowledge and liberal education skills and dispositions.  Examples include: academic coaching and tutoring in the Rinella Center, the First Year Research Experience program in the Office of Research for Undergraduates, education abroad in Global Initiatives, writing consultations in the Howe Student Writing Center, UNV 101, and the Exploratory Studies program in the Office of Exploratory Studies.

The University also participates regularly in a number of standardized national assessments that provide indirect data on the curriculum and co-curriculum.  Examples include the National Survey of Student Engagement, CIRP Freshman Survey, College Senior Survey, and Your First College Year.  In-house climate, first destination (alumni) and graduation surveys are also conducted regularly.
