Practicum Opportunities Fall 2023

Theatre practicum is a lab that allows any student to work on a theatre production backstage or on stage...and earn credit! Enrollment fulfills the experiential learning requirement of the Miami Plan.

This semester we are producing two shows in the Gates-Abegglen Theatre. Positions are available both in the shops and on run crews.

Run Crew Positions

You must be able to commit to tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances of the show you want to run.

Technical and Dress Rehearsals
Wednesday, September 27 through Friday, September 29, 7pm-11p.m.
Saturday, September 30, 10am-1pm; 3:00-8:00 pm
Monday, October 2nd and Tuesday, October 3rd from 6:00-11:00pm

Performances
October 4th, 5th, and 6th at 10am (school performances),
October 6th and 7th at 7:30
October 8th at 2pm 

Call times will be no more than 90 minutes prior to curtain.

Crew will be required to attend photo call, a KCACTF response, and strike that will be scheduled at a later date.

Note this production has three morning performances. We will will provide a letter to faculty explaining the production and requesting that the absences be excused. Excused absences are granted at the discretion of each instructor.

Technical Rehearsals: Weeknights Nov. 6-10; 7-11 p.m. (all called except wardrobe and makeup)
Sitzprobe: Sat. Nov. 11; 12-4 p.m. (only sound op, sound and mic crew called)
Dress Rehearsals: 
Sat. Nov. 11; 6-10 p.m.
Monday and Tuesday Nov. 13, 14; 6-11 p.m.
Performances: 
Wednesday-Saturday, Nov. 15-18; 7:30
Sunday, Nov. 19 2 p.m. 

Call times will be no more than 90 minutes prior to curtain

Strike: Strike will occur approx. 1 hour after the Sunday, November 19 performance ends. 

There will be a KCACTF (Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) response after one of the productions (TBD). 

Photo Call: Will be held prior to the Saturday performance. This will add approx. 90 minutes to show day and is required.

Daytime Shop Labs

Scenic Carpentry
We need students who specifically want to learn and practice skills in woodworking or metalworking, along with theatre-specific skills like rigging and set installation. Beginners are welcome.

  • Hours are set based on your schedule, though you do need at least 2-hour blocks of time between 8 am -11am or 2pm-5pm weekdays
  • You may work many hours a week for a few weeks, or spread hours out over the semester.
  • Looking for 6-10 students

Costume Construction
For now, costume construction is full. Check back next semester!

Electrics Crew
Help with the hang and focus of lights, install speakers, set up the theatre spaces for tech rehearsals.

  • Work is done during the day, scheduled around your availability. Hours will be spread over the semester
  • There may be some optional weekend calls
  • Looking for up to 4 students

Fill out and submit an Assignment Request Form. This will let us know what practicum you want to take. Area supervisors and the practicum coordinator will look over availability of positions, and then we'll enroll you in the appropriate section.

If we can't honor your request, the practicum coordinator Gion DeFrancesco will be in contact with you personally to discuss alternatives.
