How to Become a Theatre Major

Step 1: Apply to Miami.

Complete the First-Year Common Application or Transfer Application. Indicate THEATRE (FA86) as your intended college major (or the major you wish to transfer into if completing the Transfer Student application).

If you are a current Miami student changing majors or relocating from the Regionals, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Share your creative work and complete an interview with the Department of Theatre.

There are many options available for you, including:

  • At one of our admission events
  • During an individual campus visit
  • Over Zoom

Creative Examples and Interview Preparation

At your interview, you will present two different examples of your creative work. These may include:
  • a monologue
  • a song (16-32 measures)
  • plays, stories, or other creative writing
  • scenic design sketches, models, renderings
  • choreography notations
  • costume design sketches, renderings
  • light plots and/or images of lighting you've designed
  • photos of other art you've created (drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, etc.)
  • biographies of characters you've played on the stage
  • character journals or process journals you've kept
  • photos of set pieces, props, or costumes you built
  • drafting or mechanical drawing (hand or CAD)
  • parts of a prompt book
  • sound recordings of original compositions or effect manipulation
  • essays or research papers on theatre or drama, or any class project relating to theatre
  • movies you've made, web pages you've built

If you are a performer, please show us only one monologue or song, and another example of creative work from the list above. If you plan to sing, bring accompaniment on your phone. We'll have a Bluetooth speaker available.

If you are a designer, technician, or stage manager, please assemble a portfolio containing at least two different examples of creative work from the list above.

If you do everything, great! Bring in two examples of what you do best, or what makes you the most proud. Ultimately, you want to show us the bounds of your unique creative talents.

Be prepared to discuss your work, the choices you made in preparing it, and what excites you about it.

Please schedule your Department of Theatre interview through your Applicant Status Page after submitting your application to Miami University.

Submitting Work Electronically

We strongly encourage you to share your creative work with us live on campus; however, if you prefer to submit electronically, you can do so through your Applicant Status Page after submitting your application to Miami University.
