Miami University senior architecture major Sydney Marcum recently won first place in a Cincinnati design competition.

Her submission, entitled “The Humane Environmental Bridge: Celebrating the Natural Essence of Migration,” was chosen by the Cincinnati Design Awards Landscape Design event.

“I am so grateful to have received this award and am excited for the lines of discussion that the recognition of this project opens up related to human rights, social justice, environmental design, and the importance of locality,” Marcum said. “The project draws attention to these important issues in the U.S. and encourages us to rethink how we view the act of border-crossing.”

Her project was exhibited in the city in mid-October, as well as the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale: “Time Space Existence,” under the larger project led by Miami faculty Diane Fellows.

After graduation, Marcum plans on pursuing a masters degree in architecture with focuses in social justice and manifestations of US politics in architectural design.
