Miami Online has minimum requirements regarding the technology students need to succeed in online coursework. Miami recommends that students have access to a desktop or laptop computer no more than five years old. Online coursework is most compatible with a computer, and may not always be compatible with tablets and mobile devices. Miami University has a student laptop program, which allows students to purchase recommended devices at a discounted price. Students also must have access to high-speed internet connection and a web browser such as: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari.
Miami University provides students with IT support around the clock- 24 hours per day, seven days a week, even on most holidays. Students can call 513-529-7900, live chat with IT Help, or search the Knowledge Base for IT help. If students have more questions regarding IT help please refer to the technical support FAQs.
Online courses are run through Canvas, a learning management system that connects you with your instructor, coursework, and classmates. Miami Online offers students guides and tutorials regarding Canvas to support their virtual learning process. As well as information regarding recording and uploading videos on Canvas.
The Howe Writing Center’s mission is to ensure that Miami students have access to helpful feedback and support on their writing from well-trained peer consultants. Services are offered in-person, live online, and written online, Sunday through Friday. Live online appointments are hosted through an online platform WCOnline where students can meet with a peer consultant virtually during real-time using video, audio, chat, or a shared whiteboard to discuss student’s writing. Written online appointments allow peer consultants to read, respond, and provide feedback to students without meeting virtually.
