Miami University is proud to announce its successful receipt of a $1.55 million grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education for the establishment of the Southern Ohio Behavioral Health Initiative (SOBHI). The grant, awarded in collaboration with Ohio University (OU) and various two-year college programs, marks a significant step toward expanding the behavioral health workforce in underserved areas.

The Southern Ohio Behavioral Health Initiative aims to enhance the behavioral health pipeline, accommodating up to 200 students, in 20 counties situated between Miami University and Ohio University. These counties, many with direct ties to Appalachia, serve rural communities and promise increased educational opportunities for students who may not otherwise consider higher education attainable.

Matt Moore, chair of the department and the driving force behind this initiative, expressed optimism about the grant, stating, " The project is special to me as it addresses the critical need for behavioral health professionals in our region, providing educational opportunities for students while serving the community."
