University and Non-University programs are required to report suspected child abuse, injuries, illness or unacceptable behavior under the Minors on Campus policy.
What is Child Abuse?
Any recent act, or failure to act, on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation
Any act, or failure to act, on the part of a parent or caretaker, which presents an imminent risk of serious harm
Physical punishment that injures a child is abuse. Sexual contact between an adult and child is also abuse, as are some cases of sexual contact between children.
Who Must Report:
Per University policy, the duty to report applies to all those participating in University Programs, and to all University faculty, staff and students who observe any reportable behavior, whether or not the faculty, staff or students are formally part of the University Program in which the reportable behavior occurred. Further, you may be a mandatory reporter under Ohio law. A list of mandatory reporters can be found in Ohio Revised Code 215.421. University policy and state statutes provide protection for those making reports in good faith.
When to Report:
Per University policy, any situation, fact or circumstance that would reasonably give rise to a suspicion that child abuse, neglect or endangerment may have occurred shall be reported IMMEDIATELY to
The director of the University Program and the head of the academic or administrative unit that offers the University program,
Miami’s Office of the General Counsel (513-529-6734); and
MUPD (513-529-2222) or 911 if an emergency, the Oxford Police Department (513-523-4321), the Butler County Sheriff (513-785-1300) or the Butler County Public Children Services Agency (513-887-4055)
If the reportable activity involves a Non-University Program, a representative of the outside organization or entity shall also be notified.
While a direct report is preferred, reporters may also report anonymously utilizing the University’s EthicsPoint reporting system (Toll-Free HOTLINE at 1-866-294-9544 or on the web (EthicsPoint).
Injuries and Illnesses
All incidents of injury, illness or unacceptable behavior involving minors shall be reported to the director of the University Program, the head of the Sponsoring Entity and the Miami University Police and the Director of Environmental Health and Safety for appropriate investigation regardless of the severity of the incident.
