Biography
Jacob (Jake) Matig is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Marketing. He arrived at Miami University in August 2018 upon earning a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Kentucky. Prior to pursuing an academic career, he worked as a marketing communications specialist within the healthcare sector for more than 10 years.
Dr. Matig teaches multiple business communication courses within the Farmer School of Business, namely BUS 102: Foundations of Business Communication (part of the First Year Integrated Core) and BUS 284: Professional Communication for Business. He regularly calls upon his diverse academic and professional background in his teaching, and enjoys having the opportunity to help students grow in their confidence as oral and written communicators. In recognition of his teaching, Dr. Matig received the Student Recognition of Teaching Excellence (2020) and Honors Faculty of the Year - Farmer School of Business (2024) awards.
Dr. Matig's service responsibilities have been wide-ranging, including his current role as a faculty advisor for the Phi Gamma Nu business fraternity. He previously served as Assistant Director (2019-2023) and Student Services Director (2023-2024) of the First Year Integrated Core. In recognition of his service, Dr. Matig received the Outstanding Friend of Advising (2023) award.
Dr. Matig's research interests are in the intersection of interpersonal and health communication, particularly how issues of identity affect everyday health decisions. He has contributed to research that has been published in Health Communication, The Journal of American College Health, and the The Journal of Communication and Media Studies, as well as multiple scholarly book chapters.
