Graduate Assistant Director, Howe Writing Across the Curriculum (HWAC)

The Graduate Assistant Director position at the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum (HWAC) Program is designed to provide experience for doctoral students in Rhetoric and Composition who are interested in researching and potentially directing writing across the curriculum programs or other types of writing programs. In special cases, MA students will be considered.

In this position, you will receive administrative, curricular, consulting, pedagogical, and research experience that can inform your dissertation project and help prepare you to be competitive on the national job market.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with students and faculty from across the curriculum.
  • Ability to represent the HCWE in a professional manner.
  • Completed coursework that includes at least one composition theory and pedagogy course, either at Miami or at another institution.
  • A successful track record as an effective and innovative teacher of writing.

Desired experience:

  • Graduate coursework in writing program administration and/or assessment. 
  • Experience in writing program administration and/or assessment.

The student in this role will take a leadership role in the HCWE and attend regular HCWE staff meetings. He or she will report to Dr. Elizabeth Wardle, Director of the HCWE.

Work may include the following:

  • Assisting the HCWE Director in facilitating the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows Program.
  • Providing workshops and one-on-one consultations for faculty related to the teaching of writing across disciplines.
  • Assisting with faculty writing retreats and weekly writing hours.
  • Assisting with dissertation writing support groups.
  • Attending the GMP Committee and assisting with review of proposed Advanced Writing courses.

Appointment is for one year, with possibility for renewal. The position comes with generous travel funds for presentations at relevant conferences.

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., a sample syllabus, end-of-course evaluations, teaching observation letter).
