Our mission is to ensure that Miami supports its students in developing as effective writers in college, fully preparing all of our graduates to excel as writers in their careers, communities, and personal lives. We pursue this mission through two key initiatives:

We need to communicate through writing every day both personally and professionally – emails, text messages, instant messages, projects – and the list goes on. Strong writing helps you excel academically and in your field, aids in learning, and lends to your credibility. All writers are learning, and with every word put to page we understand our writing process a little better. Witnessing other people’s writing processes through the Howe Center – as both a consultant and a consulted writer – helped me challenge my own way of doing things and adopt new writing practices.

Don't be afraid to make yourself uncomfortable, whether that be by trying a new writing process, writing in a new style or voice, exploring an unfamiliar idea, or letting other people read your work. The more you try, the more you'll learn about yourself as a writer. Everybody is a writer with different skill sets and levels of experience.
