Telephone Operator

General Function

Operates switchboard and provides telephone system users with information and assistance

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Operates switchboard; answers calls; assists callers with campus telephone numbers and other information.
  • Assists users by dialing long distance numbers or connecting to long distance operator.
  • Sets up and places conference calls; assists in placing international calls.
  • Monitors operation of lines; contacts technicians when necessary.
  • Assists in the mailing of telephone bills.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to either Assistant Manager of Administration-Telecommunications or Program Assistant-Senior

Direction Given: Occasional monitoring and training of student employees

Minimum Requirements

Requires high school diploma or GED and six months office experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Ability to work will with public
  • Ability to handle rush situations or abusive callers professionally
  • Knowledge of computer and switchboard equipment

Working Conditions

Typical office environment. Must remain at a switchboard for long periods of time.
