Zoom Security Options
Listed below are a variety of security features available within Zoom. Some of these features have been turned on by default by IT Services, and some can be initiated by the meeting/event organizer either prior to, or during a session.
*Meetings created in Canvas may need to be edited from a Zoom client in order to enable these features.
Enabled Already
Require a Password
- Enabled by default at Miami
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Invited participants logged in to Zoom or Canvas will not need to actually enter the passcode
Before a Meeting
Require Registration
- Available with Canvas-created meetings*
- Available in personal rooms
- Useful when inviting participants that don't have zoom accounts
- Select the checkbox when scheduling via the web interface (MiamiOH.zoom.us)
Only Authenticated Users Can Join
- Available with Canvas-created meetings*
- Available in personal rooms
- Requires attendees to have a Zoom account
- Option for requiring a Miami-provided Zoom account
- This option can be activated using a checkbox under advanced options when creating a meeting through the Zoom client or web interface (MiamiOH.zoom.us)
Enable Waiting Rooms
- Available with Canvas-created meetings*
- Available in personal rooms
- Requires attendees to wait to be allowed into a meeting
- Requires hosts to allow attendees in
- This option can be activated using a checkbox under security when creating a meeting through the Zoom client or web interface (MiamiOH.zoom.us)
Always Display Participant Name on Their Videos
- Available with Canvas-created meetings*
- Available in personal rooms
- Useful for identification of attendees
- This option can be activated in Zoom Settings/Preferences/Video/ by selecting the checkbox for "Always display participant name on their videos"
During a Meeting
Enable Waiting Rooms
- Available with Canvas-created meetings*
- Available in personal rooms
- Requires attendees to wait to be allowed into a meeting
- Requires hosts to allow attendees in
- This option can be activated within the Security section
Lock a Meeting
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Prevents additional participants from joining the meeting
- Could prevent legitimate participants from rejoining without unlocking the meeting
- This option can be activated within the Security section
Limit Screensharing Ability
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Three different options:
- Only host can share
- Only one participant can share at a time
- Only host can start sharing when someone else is sharing
- This option can be activated under Screen Share/Advanced Sharing Options
Disable Unmute
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Participants won't be able to unmute themselves
- Host can unmute and mute participants as desired
- This option can be activated under Security with "Unmute themselves"
Disable/Limit Chat
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Can be disabled entirely or set to only permit participants to chat with the host
- This option can be activated in Chat after opening the Chat option
Mute All
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- If "Disable unmute" has not been enabled, participants can still unmute themselves after taking this action
- This option can be activated in Participants after opening the Participants option
Remove a Participant
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- This option can be activated from the Participants panel. Select the name of the attendee to remove, then select "Remove" from the options under More.
Disable Annotation for Others/Participants
- Available with Canvas-created meetings
- Available in personal rooms
- Without disabling annotation for others, any participant at any time may draw or write on the screen being shared
- This option can be activated after sharing a screen, under More.
