College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science
Miami University Regional Campuses include Miami Hamilton and Miami Middletown as well as the Voice of America Learning Center (VOALC) in West Chester.
The College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science is home to twelve academic departments and multiple degree programs. It offers a flexible and affordable model of education to meet the needs for economic, community, and work-force development in our region. Academic offerings include the following:
- Microcredentials
- Certificates
- Associate degrees
- Bachelor degrees
- Beginning coursework for most Miami University Oxford campus bachelor’s degree programs
Miami’s Regional’s offers a variety of courses online. In addition, some programs are also available in-person and on-line.
Online courses do not require you to physically and are offered through a password-protected collaborative learning environment called Canvas. Course content is available 24 hours a day and communication takes place in a variety of ways. There are two types of online courses:
- Online Asynchronous (ONLA) - All activities occur online, with no synchronous sessions or activities.
- Online Synchronous (ONLS) - All class sessions meet synchronously via web conference, with few or no asynchronous online activities
The advantages of online courses include flexibility, mobility, and accessibility. Keep in mind that these courses can be very time-consuming and require discipline and good time management to complete.
Microcredentials
Microcredentials are an exciting, new initiative happening on the Miami University campuses. They are designed to create opportunities for anyone with an emerging educational (or skills) need - they can focus on broad, unmet needs in businesses, or they can be more focused on an individual’s need for a particular skill.
Because microcredentials focus on specialized outcomes, skills or experiences that make someone better qualified to do a particular job, their benefits are far reaching. Employees with updated skills and knowledge open up opportunities for promotion or a possible career change, while employers benefit through increased productivity and a better prepared workforce.
With its focus on working adults, convenience is top priority. Learning can be accomplished via online, in-person or hybrid courses customized to meet the needs of the individual or organization. They take less time to earn than a degree, and may or may not be for college credit.
