Biology Graduate Programs

Students in undergraduate and graduate programs learn biological concepts taught by dedicated faculty and gain hands-on research experiences in the laboratory and field using first-class equipment, centers, and facilities. Our graduates pursue a wide variety of career paths in health, biotechnology, the environment, and plant science.

Our Programs

The Department offers a wide range of graduate degrees. Thesis and dissertation based Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are offered in Biology and Botany. Botany also offers the Master of Arts (MA) degree.

Students in the Department may also pursue the MS or PhD in the interdepartmental Cell, Molecular, and Structural Biology (CMSB) program or the PhD in the interdepartmental Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology (EEEB) program.

Working professionals such as teachers and nonprofit staff seeking an off-campus program that can be completed part-time while working may apply to the Advanced Inquiry Program or the Global Field Program for either an MA or MAT degree.

Combined Bachelors-Masters programs in Botany (MA and MS), Biology (MS), and CMSB (MS) are available for qualified undergraduate students.

The Department of Biology also offers Graduate Certificate in Ecology and Conservation Biology.

Cell, Molecular and Structural Biology, M.S. and Ph.D.

Cell, Molecular and Structural Biology is a multi-disciplinary program that seeks to identify and understand the molecules that collectively form the basis of all life.

 

Botany - M.A., M.S., Ph.D.

The Master of Science (M.S.)and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are offered by the graduate programs in Botany.

The Department of Biology also offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree, which is designed as a technical professional path for individuals pursuing industrial or research support as career objectives.

A combined Bachelors-Masters (M.S. and M.A.) program in Botany is available for qualified undergraduate students.

Our Graduate Certificates

Conservation Biology Certificate

The Department of Biology offers a Graduate Certificate in Conservation Biology. This Certificate integrates specialized graduate coursework with the culminating experience the student completes as part of a Masters degree, to prepare students for careers in conservation biology with federal, state, tribal, and local agencies and non-profit organizations. This Certificate provides a value-added component to a graduate degree at Miami University, specifically an M.S. in Biology, an M.A. or M.S. in Botany; Ph.D. in Biology, Botany or Ecology, Evolution, & Environmental Biology; or M.En. in environmental science. By choosing the appropriate coursework, a student can earn the Conservation Certificate simultaneously with earning a graduate degree.

 

Ecology Certificate

Students earning a M.S. in Botany or Biology are able to earn an Ecology certificate by meeting the following course requirements:

 

Course Requirements:

 

  • Pedagogy training: Complete BIO 689 during the week preceding your first fall semester in residence, and complete BIO 601 during your first fall semester in residence.
  • At least two (2) graduate seminars of topical relevance to ecology.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) credits of graduate level (e.g., 500 or above). These must include one course in population/community ecology (BIO 671), one course in ecosystem/global ecology (BIO 672), one additional graduate course in plant biology (Botany M.S.) or biology (Biology M.S.), and one course in statistics or mathematical modeling.
