International applicants who do not meet the English language proficiency requirements for regular graduate admission may be considered for Conditional Admission.  Students interested in conditional admission must provide English language scores along with their application.  Depending on the English language scores provided, students may be placed into the ELC and/or the ACE-G intensive English language program(s) offered at Miami University.  Students must complete the intensive English language program successfully before entering their graduate program.

The English Language Center (ELC) program is located on Miami University's regional campus in Middletown, Ohio. The ELC program provides students a safe and optimal learning environment to increase their English proficiency skills. Students who have the following test scores may be considered for Conditional Admission through the ELC program.

  • TOEFL iBT < 65
  • IELTS < 5.5
  • ELS 109 Certificate

Students who enter the ELC program will be tested into one of three ELC language levels. Each level takes approximately one semester (4 months) to complete. Once a student has successfully completed Level 3 in the ELC program with a B or higher, the student will then begin the ACE-G program on Miami University's main campus.

The American Culture and English for Graduate Students (ACE-G) program located on Miami University's main campus, facilitates the linguistic, cultural, and academic transition of international graduate students to Miami University. It provides high-quality English language instruction in a challenging and supportive intellectual environment, combined with the cultural and co-curricular opportunities to be successful at Miami University. Students with the following test scores may be considered for Conditional Admission through the ACE-G program.

  • TOEFL iBT: 65-79
  • IELTS: 5.5-6.0
  • ELS 112 Certificate

The ACE-G program consists of 3 English language courses focusing on advanced communication, advanced reading and writing, and presentation skills. Additionally, ACE-G students will work closely with their graduate study faculty mentor/advisor in an independent study course. Offered every Summer (intensive 8 weeks) and Spring semester (4 months) of study, students who complete the program successfully with a B or higher may begin their graduate studies the following semester.
