For the first year ever, Miami University’s dance program got to perform in the Electric Root Festival on April 29.

Renowned artist Alfred Dove taught a unique, three-and-a-half minute set to an advanced class of about twelve dancers Monday through Thursday of the week leading up to the gig.

The director of the program, Ashley Goos, facilitated this by partnering with the Performing Arts Series. She also benefited heavily from a grant from the arts management and arts entrepreneurship program to bring in Mr. Dove.

“He’s a huge deal, so it was super exciting,” Goos said. “I heard from Mr. Dove that he was impressed by the students and wants to keep working with us.”

Onceher colleagues approached her with the opportunity, she entrusted her ensemble to handle Mr. Dove’s original work well.

“The students navigated it with huge amounts of professionalism, grace and respect,” Goos said.

Since the dance went so smoothly and was warmly received, Goos hopes to return to the festival every year.

“It’s my life’s work to create an empowered environment,” Goos said. “I want to bridge the gap in the field of dance with connection and accessibility.”

Miami can hardly wait to see Goos’ program dance its socks off again next year!
