FAQs
Register to vote before the deadline. The deadline to register in Ohio is 30 days before Election Day. This means you must register to vote by Feb. 20 for the March 19 presidential primary election or by Oct. 7 for the November general election.
Ohio Resident Voter Registration Information
Ohio Voter Registration forms can be found at the Armstrong Circle desk and can be returned to the drop box next to them. All submitted forms will be mailed to the appropriate Board of Elections by the Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service.
You can also get information and forms online at the Ohio Secretary of State Elections and Voting website. You can register to vote online, by mail, or in person at your County Board of Elections office.
Voter registration forms can be submitted anytime but generally must be received 30 days prior to an election to be eligible to vote in that election.
Online Voter Registration
Ohio residents with an Ohio driver's license or state ID can register to vote online. If you do not have an Ohio driver's license or state ID, you should register using the paper form (the paper form only requires the last four digits of your social security number).

Out-of-State Voter Registration Information
As an out-of-state student, you can vote in Ohio, or you can vote back at home. This section is designed to give you the information you need once you decide on where you want to vote.
Voting in Ohio
If you are an out-of-state student who has a driver's license from your home state, getting an Ohio driver's license or state ID will void your original license. Most students do not want this option.
If you are an out-of-state student who does not have a driver's license from any state, you can choose to get an Ohio BMV-issued state ID to use for voting (or any other) purposes. However, if you have funding or scholarships in which your residence is relevant, getting an Ohio ID may endanger that funding.
Because of this, out-of-state students who want to vote in an Ohio election are encouraged to vote by mail using an absentee ballot. As only the last 4 digits of the voter's social security number are needed, these students can bypass the photo ID requirement.
Out-of-state students typically must vote absentee if they wish to vote in Ohio.
To register to vote in the state of Ohio, you must have one of the following forms of photo ID:
- Ohio driver's license or state of Ohio ID card (current address not required).
- Interim ID form issued by the Ohio BMV.
- A US passport or a US passport card.
- US military, Ohio National Guard, or Veterans Affairs ID card.
- Last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (paper registration only).
All photo IDs must have the following:
- An expiration date that has not passed.
- A photograph of the voter.
- The voter’s name, which must substantially conform to the voter’s name as it appears in the Poll List or in the Poll Book.
NOTICE: An unexpired Ohio Driver License, State ID Card, or Interim Documentation with your former address IS an ACCEPTABLE form of ID when your current address is in the pollbook.
Please note in the state of Ohio, you will be required to forfeit the ID from your home state if you get an Ohio driver’s license. Also, note that utility bills and “proof of address” screenshots previously provided to Miami students are no longer valid forms of identification.
You can access the Ohio Voter Registration Form at the Ohio Secretary of State Elections and Voting website. Voter registration can be submitted anytime but generally must be received 30 days prior to an election to be eligible to vote in that election.
Completed and signed forms can be returned to these offices or mailed to the Board of Elections for Butler County or the Secretary of State's office.
Voting in Your Home State
To register to vote in your home state, information is available on Vote411 or check the state's Board of Elections/Secretary of State website.
Deadlines, dates for primary elections, and processes to register and vote vary from state to state. Additionally, opportunities for early voting and absentee ballot use will vary from state to state.

The state of Ohio passed new voter identification laws in 2023. Please review the following information carefully.
Step 1: Confirm both your registration and polling location on the Butler County Board of Elections website.
Step 2: Ensure you have one of the following forms of ID to present at your polling site on Election Day (student IDs will not be accepted at the polls). Note out-of-state students must typically vote absentee (early by mail) if they registered to vote without an Ohio ID.
- A current (non-expired) Ohio driver’s license or US Passport with your name and photo. The address on your license does not need to be current as long as your current address is in the pollbook.
- U.S. Military ID/Ohio National Guard ID/US Department of Veterans Affairs ID with your name and photo (address not required).
Unacceptable Types of ID
Ohio law prohibits acceptance of the following forms of ID:- Driver’s license or photo identification card issued by a state other than Ohio;
- Social Security card;
- Birth certificate;
- Insurance card;
- Utility bill;
- Bank statement;
- Government check;
- Paycheck;
- Other government document; or
- Any registration acknowledgment notice from the county board of elections.
Step 3: Vote at your polling site on election day. (Don’t forget one of the forms of ID mentioned above!)
- Residence hall students: If you are registered to vote using your residence hall address, your polling location is The Marcum Hotel & Conference Center at 951 E. Withrow St. (directions).
- Off-campus students: Be sure to check your polling location on the Butler County Board of Elections Website.
Step 1: Complete, print, and sign the Absentee Ballot Application form and return it by mail or in person to:

Absentee ballots must be requested at least seven days before an election.
Step 2: When you receive your ballot and identification envelope in the mail, follow the instructions included and return your voted ballot by mail or via the drop box located outside the Board of Elections office.
To make sure your absentee ballot is counted, it must be completely filled out, signed, dated, in the proper envelopes, and received by the Board of Elections by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day OR be postmarked by the day before Election Day.
