MiamiConnects: Virtual Global Learning at Miami

Faculty Experiences

Dr. Elena Albarrán, associate professor of history and global and intercultural studies, incorporates innovative online interactions in her classrooms to encourage informal and organic international encounters for her students. Recently, she collaborated with Dr. Susana Sosenski at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Dr. Sonia Robles at Mexico City's Universidad Panamericana. For certain classes she arranged for her students to engage directly online with university students from Mexico City.

Dr. Rodney Coates, professor of Global and Intercultural Studies, developed GIC 487A: Globalization, Social Justice and Human Rights to explore theories, debates, and pedagogy associated with these issues. The course incorporates remote interactions with students in Italy, England, Russia, Canada and Spain to expose students to diverse perspectives. Through collaborative projects with peers around the world, students reflect on how globalization shapes and transforms local communities and national cultures.

Dr. Daniel E. Hall, Professor of Justice and Community Studies, Political Science, and Global and Intercultural Studies at Miami University and Visiting Professor of Law at Sun Yat-sen University in China, incorporates both real time and asynchronous class discussions and collaborative projects between Miami students in CJS 451, Comparative Justice Systems, and criminal law students at Sun Yat-sen University. Through these efforts, students examine the role history, culture, economics, and politics play in informing a person's understanding of justice and in the organization and operation of justice systems.
