Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Provides basic to intermediate assistance to users of the Library; explains procedures to users; locates books and other materials.
  • Assist in the enforcement of rules and regulations regarding library patrons.
  • Oversees student employees; assigns tasks and monitors performance; serves as informational resource providing guidance and assistance.
  • Performs various other duties which may include shipping or receiving of library materials, maintaining reference collection, balancing monetary accounts; sending out bills and overdue notices, and preparing statistical reports.
  • Serves as informational resource to students, faculty and students; investigates and resolves problems or difficulties related to area of expertise.
  • Provide assistance at the Circulation Desk, Information Desk, or other areas of the Library as needed.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Library Dean, Director, the head of a Library department, Library Associate or the manager of a branch

Direction Given: Functional guidance to a group of student employees on an ongoing basis

Minimum Requirements

Requires nine months of coursework or training beyond high school and two years of library experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of subject matter covered by library department
  • Knowledge of computer and library research software, ability to motivate student employees

Working Conditions

Periodic assignments given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations
