At Miami University, SCORM packaged content may be used within Canvas and the Learning application in Workday. However, it's important to note that these packages often present accessibility challenges, as their user interface and overall experience are typically embedded within the SCORM content itself.
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a collection of technical standards and specifications for web-based e-learning software. The model defines how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate. This standardization allows for interoperability, meaning that SCORM-compliant content can be created once and used across various LMS platforms. It packages learning materials, such as interactive modules, quizzes, and multimedia, into a format that an LMS can track, record, and report on learner progress, including completion status, scores, and time spent.
Typically, the SCORM package itself contains the user interface that learners interact with, rather than the LMS providing a separate interface for the SCORM content. When a SCORM module is launched from an LMS, the LMS essentially serves as a container, launching the SCORM content, which then presents its own interactive elements, navigation, and visual layout directly to the user. This means that any accessibility issues within the SCORM package's interface directly impact the user experience, regardless of the LMS's own accessibility features.
SCORM modules can present significant accessibility challenges for learners with disabilities. For instance, interactive elements might lack keyboard navigation or screen reader compatibility, making them unusable for individuals with motor impairments or visual impairments. Multimedia content, like videos or animations, may not include captions or transcripts, excluding learners with hearing impairments. Therefore, SCORM modules should be reviewed for accessibility similar to website applications and content. This involves automated testing and manual testing with keyboard and screen readers. If you would like the AccessMU center to help review a SCORM module, please fill out the AT Request form and select "website review."
