Selecting Courses
Differences Between High School and College Courses
College is different from high school. In general, you should be prepared to take on more responsibility for your education, including preparing for and attending classes, staying on top of deadlines and requirements, and taking responsibility for the outcomes of the efforts you put in. Below we detail a number of ways that college courses are different from high school classes.
Differences
High School | College |

Your parents and teachers often remind you of your responsibilities and guide you in setting priorities. | You must balance your own responsibilities, set priorities, and manage the outcomes of your decisions. |
You aren’t responsible for knowing what it takes to graduate. | Academic advisors assist you in understanding the requirements you need to meet, and you are accountable for meeting them. |
Classes generally have no more than 35 students in them. | Classes may sometimes number 100 students or more. |
You may not need to read anything more than once, and sometimes listening in class is enough to perform well. | You need to review class notes, read material carefully, and be prepared to engage in class. |
You are expected to read short assignments that are then discussed, and often re-taught, in class. | You may be assigned substantial amounts of reading and writing which may not be directly addressed in class. |
You may study outside of class as little as 0 to 2 hours a week, and this may be mostly last-minute test preparation. | You need to study at least 2 to 3 hours outside of class for each hour in class. |
Teachers remind you about incomplete work and let you know what you missed if you are absent. | Professors may not remind you of deadlines or incomplete work. If you are absent from class, you should approach another student in the class or consult the syllabus for any material you missed. |
Teachers may approach you if they believe you are falling behind or need assistance. | Professors are usually open and helpful, but most expect you to initiate contact if you need assistance. |
Teachers present material to help you understand what is covered in the textbook and prepare for examinations. | Professors focus on your understanding of the topics and concepts of the discipline, but may not follow the textbook. Instead, they often supplement the text with illustrations, background information, or related research. They will expect you to connect ideas presented in class to your readings. |
Teachers often take time to remind you of due dates of upcoming assignments. | Professors expect you to consult the syllabus for all deadlines. |
Teachers may take roll for class attendance. | Professors may not always take attendance, but know if you are not there. Attending class is important for your success. |
Testing is frequent and covers small amounts of material. | Testing is usually infrequent and may be cumulative, covering large amounts of material. You are responsible for organizing material to prepare for the test. |
Makeup tests and extra credit are often available. | Makeup tests and extra credit are seldom offered. |
You receive grades for most assigned work; consistently good homework grades or attendance may raise your overall grade. | Grades may not be provided for all assigned work, and grades on major papers and tests usually comprise most of the final grade. |
Choosing Between Different Levels of Courses
Familiarize yourself with Miami’s course numbering system below.
- We recommend that first-year students register for introductory level and Perspectives courses (100-299).
- Transfer students should consider prerequisites and their prior knowledge of the subject before enrolling in higher level courses.

100-199 | Introductory-level undergraduate courses that are appropriate for first-year students. |
200-399 | High-introductory to intermediate-level courses. |
400-499 | Advanced level courses that are appropriate for advanced undergraduates, i.e., juniors and seniors. |
