General Questions

What are the benefits of taking summer classes?

Miami has an optional Summer Term to provide additional and flexible academic opportunities such as study abroad, research, and class opportunities.

When is Summer Term 2017?

Summer Term occurs Tuesday, May 22, 2018 through Saturday, August 11, 2018 with opportunities to take shorter sprint courses ranging from four weeks in duration to the full 12-week term. Check the online class schedule, BannerWeb, and the syllabus for your class for specific meeting times.

Will Summer Term classes be offered on all Miami campuses?

Summer Term classes will be offered at the following locations: Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown, Voice of America Learning Center (VOALC), Luxembourg European Center, and online through E-Campus.

Am I required to take Summer Term courses?

No. Students are not required to take classes during the Summer Term, as it is an optional term. For students not taking classes during Summer Term, the break will last until the beginning of fall semester, which begins on Monday, August 27, 2018. The extended break allows time for work opportunities, internships and co-ops, and completing job and graduate school applications.

What Miami services will be available?

Residence halls, Dining Halls, the Rec Center, Goggin Ice Center, Miami University Bookstore, and the BCRTA (bus service) are some of the services that will be available during Summer Term. Food service locations will be limited based on enrollment and number of students attending the various locations, and meal plans will be accepted. Some of the services provided on the locations will be limited over Summer Term. Please note that parking restrictions will be enforced during Summer Term. The Health Center is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Student Counseling Service is open Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during Summer Term.

For Regional campus services:

Some services will be unavailable at the Regional campuses during Summer Term. The dining hall and coffee shop at the Hamilton and Middletown campuses will be closed, tutoring is not available, and the BCRTA bus service does not operate during this time. Students will have access to all other services such as the library, computing technology center, academic advising, Career Services, and the One Stop.

The Regional campuses are open Mondays from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Fridays from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during Summer Term. Services like the library may be open later.

Who has access to the Rec Center?

Any full- or part-time student that is paying the Oxford Student Fee for the summer term and has no holds on their Bursar account has access to the Rec Center. Any student not paying the Oxford Student Fee for the summer but paid it for the previous fall and spring semester will also have access. Any student who did not or is not paying this fee will have to purchase a membership for access. All students must have their student ID to enter the facility. No other form of ID will allow access.

How will I get connected with companies for an internship or job shadowing?

Career Services will provide guidance and advising to students seeking a Summer Term internship or job shadowing experience. Miami has strong partnerships with many companies and organizations nationally, and Career Services can help you explore how to connect with employers about Summer Term opportunities. In addition, students may work with Career Services to have resumes reviewed, schedule in-person or virtual advising appointments, and participate in mock interviews over the summer. Career Services and other university offices may sponsor career-related events during the Summer Term as well. Can I start at Miami during the Summer Term?

Admission to Miami (including Regional campuses) is only for fall or spring semesters for undergraduate students; however, these students have the option of early enrollment to the preceding Summer or Winter Term. Please contact the Office of Admission with specific questions.

Registration

When can I sign up for classes and how many credits may I take?

Registration for Summer Term is already open for all students. The credit-hour limit is 16 credit hours for Summer Term, eight credit hours for the six-week summer sprints, and 1.3 credit hours per week for overlapping sprints. Requests for more than 16 credit hours must be made to your academic divisional advising office. For questions regarding course registration, contact:

How do I register for a workshop format class?

A separate process is required to register for most workshops through the Office of Global Initiatives to process registrations. For questions about workshop registration, contact the Office of Global Initiatives at 513-529-8600 or by email at Global@MiamiOH.edu.

What opportunities are available during Summer Term?

Academic experiences will include, but are not limited to, on-campus, online, or hybrid courses including studying abroad or studying within the U.S., conducting research, completing a Miami Plan class, or fulfilling an upper division major's class.

What kind of research will be available?

Research projects will vary by department and academic division. Students are encouraged to meet with professors during the semester to set up research projects to work on during Summer Term. Students should consider applying for one of 100 Undergraduate Summer Scholar awards with a faculty mentor. Students may also contact the Office of Research for Undergraduates for assistance in identifying other summer research opportunities by visiting the office in King Library or calling 513-529-2455.

Will there be final exams for Summer Term?

Final examinations are expected in all classes unless other evaluative substitute procedures have been approved by the department chair or dean of the academic division. Consult the class syllabus.

Can I graduate following Summer Term?

Students may graduate from any of the four terms at Miami University by following the University graduation process.


Tuition and Fees

What are the tuition and fees for Summer Term?

Tuition will be charged on a per-credit hour basis, based on the student's campus. A Regional campus student will pay Regional campus tuition and fees, unless taking the majority of hours at Oxford, in which case Oxford tuition and fees apply. All current Summer Term tuition and fees information may be found on the One Stop website.

How will I be notified of my Summer Term charges and when are they due?

All students registered for Summer Term will receive an email to their MiamiOH.edu email in April notifying them of their Summer Term charges. This email links the student to their account where all charges are itemized and payment can be made. The email will also alert the student of the due date.

Will financial aid be available?

Starting in April, students will be notified of their eligibility for summer aid upon registering for summer classes if they have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with Miami and if they have completed all outstanding financial aid requirements.

Summer financial aid is based on any remaining aid eligibility the student has from the current academic year. Generally, students are only eligible for additional federal student loan funds if they have the number of hours required to advance in grade level by the end of the spring semester. Students cannot use their Miami scholarships for summer session(s) unless the scholarship was awarded specifically for summer study. If all federal student loan eligibility has been exhausted, the student may want to consider a Federal Direct PLUS loan or a private loan.

Campus Facilities

May I live in the residence hall during Summer Term?

Yes, on-campus housing is available and optional during the Summer Term for students who are taking class(es) in Oxford. Students will be housed in summer school-specific halls for all summer sessions.

What dining locations are open during Summer Term?

For a full list of Oxford dining locations and their hours of operation during Summer Term, visit the Dining Services website. Regional campuses dining services are not open during Summer Term.

What are the Summer Term hours at the Regional campuses?

The campuses are open Monday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during Summer Term. Services like the library may be open later. 

Will libraries be open to students during Summer Term?

Yes, Miami University Libraries will have limited hours during Summer Term. The hours of operation are as follows:

Will parking be available for students or visitors?

For information regarding parking options and permits available in Oxford, please visit our website. Parking is also available in our paid facilities such as a parking garage or parking meter by paying the hourly rate.

For parking on the Regional campuses, students may pick up a parking pass from the One Stop.
