What is the Pathways Program?
The Pathways Program is a conditional admission initiative designed for students who demonstrate strong academic potential, but who do not initially receive standard admission to Miami University’s main campus in Oxford.
Pathways students begin their college journey on the Oxford campus as full-time students, enjoying all the benefits of Oxford campus life, housing, and activities. To ensure you make a seamless transition, you will be paired with a dedicated Student Success Navigator to support your academic success.
Understanding Conditional Admission
As a Pathways student, your enrollment begins under a framework designed to quickly transition you to a full degree-seeking status.
- Enrollment Status: You will enter Miami in a conditional, non-degree status for your first semester, registered for a full-time course load (12+ credits) with courses that apply toward the degree program to which you’re seeking admission.
- Accelerated Bridge: After one successful semester meeting a minimum 2.0 GPA and course credit benchmarks, you will transition into full, degree-seeking standing.
- Financial Aid Notice: Conditionally admitted students are ineligible for Federal Student Aid (Title IV) during their first semester. Federal aid eligibility unlocks in your second semester once you transition to full standing. Miami can direct you to private financing options that may help bridge that first-semester gap.

Program Basics
What is the Pathways program?
Pathways is a short-term, intensive transition program. Students are conditionally admitted to Miami in a non-degree status for their first semester. By maintaining full-time enrollment (12+ credits) and meeting academic benchmarks, students use their first semester as a "bridge" to earn full, degree-seeking admission to the Oxford campus by their second semester.
What campus will I attend?
You will attend classes in person on the Oxford campus from day one. Your courses are taught by Miami faculty.
Can I take online classes?
No. Participants must take in-person classes on the Oxford campus to ensure full integration into the academic and residential community.
Do I have to live in university housing on the Oxford campus?
Yes. Pathways students are a vital part of our residential community and live in Oxford campus residence halls.
Will I have full access to Oxford campus facilities and activities?
Absolutely. Pathways students use a mobile Digital ID for unrestricted access to residence halls, dining, the Recreational Sports Center, and library resources. You can participate fully in campus life, including the MU Marching Band, Greek Life (requires a 2.50+ GPA), student organizations, and intramural sports. (Note: Pathways students are not eligible for varsity NCAA athletics during their conditional period).
What benchmarks must I meet to transition to full admission?
To successfully cross the "bridge" to full degree-seeking standing and unlock federal aid for your second semester, you must complete your first semester full-time (12+ credits) while meeting specific GPA benchmarks and maintaining a satisfactory behavioral/conduct record. Your Student Success Navigator will track these benchmarks with you closely.
What happens if I do not meet the benchmarks in my first semester?
The program is designed as a one-semester bridge to full admission. If exceptional circumstances prevent you from meeting your credit or GPA benchmarks, enrollment status is evaluated individually. Students may request an appeal for a second semester to regain eligibility.
Are there any restrictions on what majors I can pursue?
Pathways students enter Miami as non-degree students for their first term. Upon transitioning to full standing, you can declare your major. Note on specific majors: Students with strong quantitative skills can work with their Student Success Navigator to meet prerequisites for admission into the Farmer School of Business by their second year. Majors in Nursing and Architecture are unavailable to Pathways students.
What academic support will I receive?
Even though the formal transition to full admission happens after one successful semester, Miami provides a full year of wraparound services. You will be paired with a dedicated Student Success Navigator in the Student Success Center to assist with course registration, academic monitoring, and connecting you to campus resources.
Do I have to take specific cohort classes?
Yes. To build a strong peer network, Pathways students take certain core classes together. All Pathways students are required to take a Pathways-specific section of the First-Year Experience Course (UNV 101) during their first semester. Students will select which Pathways courses and advance credit (AP credit, for example) fill the requirements of their intended major.
Do AP, CLEP, or College Credit Plus (CCP) credits count toward my transition?
No. While these credits may apply toward your overall graduation requirements, they do not count toward the full-time credit hours required to complete your first-semester Pathways transition. All qualifying transition coursework must be taken at Miami following high school graduation.

Billing and Financial Aid
How does tuition and billing work?
Pathways students are registered for a full-time course load ahead of the semester and are billed the standard Oxford campus tuition, housing, meal plan, and fees right from the start. This ensures you are locked into the correct Tuition Promise cohort, which freezes your Miami tuition and other costs for up to four years.
Am I eligible for Federal Financial Aid during the Pathways program?
You are not eligible for Federal Student Aid (Title IV funds, such as Federal Pell Grants or Direct Loans) during your first semester.
However, once you successfully complete your first semester and transition to full, degree-seeking standing, your federal financial aid eligibility will unlock for your second semester and beyond.
How do I pay for my first semester without federal aid?
To help families bridge the first-semester funding gap, Miami provides a Preferred Private Lender List. Private educational loans serve as the primary borrowing option for Pathways families during the first term.
For exceptional circumstances where private lending options have been entirely exhausted, Miami maintains a strictly limited, case-by-case internal Institutional Loan Funding review process as a safety net of last resort.

Next Steps and Accepting Your Offer
I am on the waitlist to be offered admission to the Oxford campus. Will accepting my offer for Pathways hurt my chances for admission to the main campus?
What is the process to register for the Pathways program?
Complete the online response form on your Applicant Status Page and complete the "Accept Your Admission Offer: First-Year Students" form no later than May 1.
How much is the deposit to enroll in the Pathways program and when is it due?
A $425 deposit is due May 1.
Preparing to Transition
What is a Digital ID and how do I use it?
Digital ID is Miami’s default form of ID for incoming students and new employees. Digital ID provides access to residence halls, campus buildings, meal plans, Recreational Sports Center, MUlaa debit accounts, library resources and more.
How do I enroll for courses as a Pathways student?
A Student Success Navigator assists students with the necessary steps for enrollment and course registration for their first-year fall and spring semesters. All Pathways students are required to take the First Year Experience Course, UNV 101, in the fall.
How do I enroll in courses after I’ve completed Pathways?
If requirements have been met, your Student Success Navigator will assist in registration for your second semester courses while also transitioning you to an Oxford advisor in your major’s division for future academic support.
Am I eligible to participate in fraternity or sorority recruitment?
Yes. Pathways students are eligible to participate in Greek life. To participate, students register online at the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. Eligibility requirements include a 2.50+ GPA and full-time status.
