Computer Requirements
The Department of Art highly recommends a Macintosh laptop computer outfitted with specific software (see list below).
- For specifications and costs of the computers, visit the Miami University Bookstore's Miami Notebook site. While other laptops may appear to be equivalent to the one we specify, we cannot guarantee their compatibility with our curricular needs.
- Financing for computers may be available through the First Miami Student/Alumni Federal Credit Union.
Hardware
- Apple MacBook Pro - Laptop Computer
- 16-inch display
- At least 18GB of Memory (RAM)
Software
- Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium or Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Make sure to get student pricing when you sign up.*
- Microsoft Office Suite or Office Pro Plus (Free for Miami students; current version Office 2016)
*Note: We use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Fonts, and Figma almost daily.
Communication Design students: view additional requirements

Color Inkjet Printer (8.5 x 11" minimum); Scanner; Mouse; Drawing Tablet
For History of Art and Architecture Majors only
Art history students may choose either a PC or a Mac. Software for the PC should include a recent version of Microsoft Office. Adobe Creative Suite is optional. Visit IT @ Miami for additional support.
Communication Design Computing Requirements 2024
Hardware
- Platform: macOS 14 Sonoma or later
- Processor: M3 or greater
- RAM: 18GB or greater
- Storage: 1 TB or greater
- Screen size: 14" minimum, 16" highly recommended
Software
