International students (who are non-residents for tax purposes) with no taxable income will only need to file the IRS Form 8843.
This form is essential for all international students and scholars in the U.S. because it helps determine residency status for tax purposes as well as tax requirements by excluding the days of presence for the purposes of the Substantial Presence test. If you are using Sprintax to file other tax forms, the software will automatically complete and submit this form for you as well.
If you are not filing other tax forms with them, then Sprintax charges a fee to complete this form. However, they also offer a helpful, free blog with detailed instructions on how to file Form 8843 by paper.
Note: Please do not be concerned by the term “Individual with Medical Condition”. If you are an international student or scholar, you will be completing the form as an Exempt Individual.
International students (who are non-residents for tax purposes) with taxable income will need to file:
All students and scholars who received income or taxable scholarships from Miami University during the tax year, will receive Sprintax access codes. This resource provided by Miami, will cover the costs of the primary Non-Resident tax forms created in the Sprintax
Be aware that many local offices providing tax assistance are not familiar with the specialized tax requirements for international students. Similarly, popular online tax services may not be compatible with international student tax requirements. It is recommended that any advice regarding taxes be sought out from an experienced professional who has knowledge of non-resident alien tax requirements. Do not use TurboTax, H&R Block, or other software unless Sprintax indicates that you are a "Resident Alien for Tax Purposes." These companies do not offer the forms that are required for non-resident aliens. Using these companies or their software may cause you to file your taxes incorrectly if you are a resident alien for tax purposes.
International students (who are residents for tax purposes) should plan to file:
Residents for Tax Purposes may consult a local tax professional or use another online tax preparation program to file your federal and state tax forms. There are many programs to choose from, you can find them by doing an online search. The IRS provides a list of trusted partners, many of whom offer free federal and/or state tax return filing options.
