Enrollment
Enrollment Requirements
U.S. law requires international students to register for full-time study during each fall and spring semester. Full-time study is defined as 12 credits of coursework for undergraduate students and 9 credits for graduate students. For online and hybrid course information, please see the Online and Hybrid Enrollment section. Students are expected to continually make normal academic progress towards program completion.
F-1 students who were issued a Language Training I-20 or J-1 students admitted to study intensive English courses must enroll in at least 18 clock hours per week.
Enrollment during winter or summer terms is generally optional for continuing students. If students are starting or returning to their studies at Miami, a winter or summer term must be full-time.
Course Withdrawal Reminder
If you need to withdraw from a course during the semester, please be sure that you are still enrolled in at least 12 credits (undergraduate) or 9 credits (graduate) to maintain your legal status! If you withdraw from a course and drop below full-time, you risk losing your legal status.
Importance of Attendance
At Miami professors have the option to automatically “drop” you if you have missed too many class sessions, resulting in a withdrawal of the course from your schedule. If this drop causes your enrollment to go below full-time, you can lose your legal status. If you think you might be at risk of being dropped due to not attending class, please come speak with an ISSS advisor.
