What is the "College of Engineering and Computing fee"?

Beginning with the entering class in Fall 2013, there is a College of Engineering and Computing fee per semester charge for all undergraduate students at the Oxford campus in the College of Engineering and Computing. The students’ fee will be charged per entering cohort and will not increase for four years for that specific cohort. Students who are full time will be charged the full fee while part-time students will be charged a pro-rated amount dependent on the number of credit hours taken in the semester.

Do other schools/colleges of engineering have similar charges?

Yes. In fact, every state university in Ohio with an engineering school has charged a similar fee for many years. Miami’s fee is lower than the fee charged at Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati.

What is the purpose of the fee?

The primary purpose of the fee is to maintain the quality of our undergraduate programs in a time of budget cuts and decreasing state support. Providing quality programs in engineering and computing is consistent with the vision of Miami University to “provide the best undergraduate experience in the nation, enhanced by superior, select graduate programs” and with the goal to “promote an innovative, engaged learning and discovery environment that produces extraordinary student and scholarly success.” We anticipate that the additional revenue provided by the fee will assist us in:

• Attracting and retaining high-quality faculty dedicated to the teacher-scholar mission of Miami University
• Continuing to provide personalized attention and close interaction of faculty and students inside and outside the classroom which has a known impact on timely completion of degrees for majority and underrepresented students
• Maintaining state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our students are well prepared for complex leadership positions in the computing and engineering fields
• Providing increased opportunities for students to engage in undergraduate research and international learning experiences

Who pays this fee?

Students with a major in the College of Engineering and Computing on the Oxford campus and who begin at Miami in Fall 2013 or later will pay this fee each semester.
