What Career Paths Are Available to Me?

A Miami accountancy degree opens doors to a diverse range of career paths, generally falling under one of the categories listed below. The breadth of career options reflects the adaptability and indispensability of accounting expertise in our economy, where accounting is considered the language of business. Accountants derive satisfaction from the impactful contributions they make at the most successful companies in the world, whether navigating complex business challenges, developing solutions, or enhancing investor trust in businesses. Graduates also often achieve CPA licensing shortly after graduation, which is advantageous to help advance their careers in the long run.

Public Accounting

Upon graduation, many of our Miami graduates go into public accounting. Public accountants serve many clients as an objective outsider or in an advisory capacity. Accounting firms vary in size, ranging from small local accounting practices to large international CPA firms. The services they provide include assurance services, tax, environmental accounting, forensic accounting, and information technology, among others.

Corporate and Managerial Accounting

Accountants in business and industry work for companies ranging from family-owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies. They serve as strategic business partners of their organizations and work in a variety of areas. While many students considering a career in corporate accounting start with public accounting to gain experience in a wide variety of industries, others with special interests or previous experience may elect to go straight into corporate accounting. Areas of work include CFO, financial management, financial reporting, internal audit, management accounting, and tax.

Advisory and Consulting

Accountants are part of cross-functional teams that help solve business problems, including assessing business operations and advising on implementation of business solutions. Advisory and consulting are fast-paced environments in which you will gain insights into diverse business operations, assess their strengths and weaknesses, identify opportunities, manage risks, and contribute to the design of innovative solutions, taking into account a multitude of factors.

Accountants often find rewarding jobs in the finance field as investment bankers, financial service professionals, financial managers, CFOs, and in private equity professionals. Finance professionals benefit greatly from having a deep understanding of accounting, enabling them to comprehend complex estimates and judgments underlying financial data.

Government and Nonprofit

Accountants can serve in governments at the federal, state, and local levels or they can align their passions with their skills by contributing to the nonprofit sector, which includes hospitals, schools, and universities. Whether serving as an auditor, CFO, consultant, or board member, accounting professionals play a crucial role in helping government and nonprofit organizations manage their resources efficiently and effectively to achieve their missions.
