Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

The Miami University (MU) Student Counseling Service (SCS) APA Accredited Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology is located on MU’s campus; a mid-sized, Midwestern university community of approximately 18,000 students.  Our philosophy of training is a culturally focused Developmental Mentorship Practitioner (DMP) model designed to train generalists to be prepared for entry-level practice in health service psychology and to function in multiple clinical contexts.

The internship positions are for twelve months, beginning August 1 and ending July 31. Interns receive supervision from licensed psychologists and interact with our multidisciplinary team. Doctoral interns are trained and provide services (both in person and through Telebehavioral Health/TBH) including individual, group, and relationship therapy; assessment, diagnosis and triage; daytime and after hours crisis intervention; supervision; consultation; outreach and programing; and possibly teaching. One of our four internship positions specializes in working with international students. This intern will participate in the same activities as the other three interns, with an additional focus on working with international students, especially Asian international students.

The MU SCS internship does not enter into training contracts with academic training programs, and the MU SCS supervisors do not complete evaluations on interns developed by academic training programs. We will provide a midyear and end of internship progress letter in addition to our evaluation forms.

MU SCS requires that applicants have received the following minimum number of hours of the following categories at the time of application. For the 2023-24 year we will be accepting applications from candidates with 500 total hours.

Other Required Minimum Criteria

  1. Graduate Program must be APA or CPA Accredited.
  2. Comprehensive Exams must be successfully completed prior to the submission of the ranking list (February 1). 
  3. Dissertation/ Research Project Proposal must be approved prior to the submission of the ranking list (February 1).

  • Medical insurance (~ $20/month) through Anthem; family and domestic partner benefits available. In addition, MU has a staff health clinic onsite that provides medical services at no charge.
  • Dental insurance (~ $5/month) through Delta Dental and vision care is available through VSP.
  • Staff parking privileges (~ $125/year). Parking is adjacent to MU SCS.
  • Additional professional days for: dissertation defense, graduation, job interviews, and/or attendance at professional conferences to be negotiated with the Training Director and Director.
  • MU budget permitting, a small travel allowance for attendance at professional conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Individual intern offices.
