Training Activities

Interns engage in a variety of training experiences including didactics, supervision, mentoring relationships, and professional development.

Supervision

  • Supervision is a highly valued aspect of the training at MU SCS. Supervision occurs in both individual and group settings and involves review of video tape.
  • MU SCS adheres to the following Policy Regarding Intern Self-Disclosure:
    • Self-discovery is essential to growth as a psychologist; therefore interns are encouraged to disclose historical and cultural influences that may affect clinical practice.
    • At no time is the supervision experience intended to be a therapeutic relationship or to substitute for therapy.
    • Our training program functions in a manner consistent with the American Psychological Association's 2002 Ethical Standard 7.04 (Student Disclosure of Personal Information) as contained in the Revised Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (APA, 2002).

Individual Supervision

  • Clinical supervisors are selected each semester, in a process of mutual best-match interviewing, based on intern goals and developmental needs.
  • In order to benefit from varied feedback, a broader exchange of ideas, and exposure to different styles of supervision, interns change clinical supervisors at winter break, and possibly for summer, based on supervisor availability.
  • Interns meet individually, once a week for 2 hours, with their clinical supervisor. The format and content of this supervision are determined by the needs of the intern, as well as by the style and approach of the individual supervisor.
  • All supervisors provide feedback on videotaped sessions, facilitate diagnosis and treatment planning, and review therapy progress for each on-going client.

Group Supervision

Interns meet as a cohort, with at least one licensed psychologist, for the following group supervision experiences. Group supervision provides a forum for processing reactions, mentoring, observational learning, and supervisory and consultative guidance.

  • Group Supervision of Individual Therapy
    • Interns meet for group discussion of individual casework every other week.
    • Interns alternate showing video of therapy with clients and providing informal presentations.
  • Group Supervision of Group Therapy
    • Interns meet every other week to discuss co-facilitation of therapy groups.
    • This experience typically includes both a didactic/consultative aspect and a feedback/group process component.
  • Group Supervision of Supervision
    • In the fall semester, interns attend weekly supervision to discuss interns' supervision of doctoral trainees.
  • Supervision of Assessment
    • During the Assessment Seminar interns also receive direct supervision on interpretation of assessment results, integrative report writing, and feedback to clients.

Mentorship and Professional Development

Meeting with the Training Director

  • Interns as a cohort meet weekly with the training director to process concerns, discuss administrative questions and procedures, and bond as a cohort.

Mentorship

  • In multiple contexts and settings, interns are provided opportunities to explore the integration of personal and professional identity with the support of staff members and peers.

Senior Staff Meeting

  • Interns rotate attending every other week senior staff meetings to gain exposure to counseling center activities and to provide input into group decisions.

Full Staff Clinical Meeting

  • All trainees and staff meet once a week in a consultative meeting to discuss administrative issues, changes and reminders about policies, clinical concerns, and crisis and emergency activity important to all staff.

Intern Selection and Staff Hiring

  • Interns are an integral part of all aspects of the intern selection process. They read and evaluate applicant files, learn about scheduling and administration, and they are fully involved in the interview process.
  • When relevant, interns also participate in interviewing and evaluating potential staff hires.

Research Opportunities and Support

  • We encourage and support interns in efforts to complete and defend their dissertations during the internship year.
  • Interns are encouraged to pursue additional research interests to the extent that they have time do so within the scheduled week.
