In a typical year, more than 60% of all Miami students working on independent research opportunities come from the College of Arts and Science. These interdisciplinary and experiential learning collaborations enable you to work closely with faculty mentors or to develop your own independent research projects — on campus, online, and around the world — whether you are a first-year undergraduate student, a graduate degree candidate, or a member of our faculty.

Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies

The Havighurst Center is devoted to joint research by Miami faculty with other scholars from Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and from other American universities; to service and learning activities that provide a greater understanding of this region for the student community; and to programs designed to foster interdisciplinary research on the most important questions relating to the future of this area.

Institute for the Environment and Sustainability

The Institute for the Environment & Sustainability (IES) educates students as professionals and global citizens through interdisciplinary programs in environmental science and sustainability, and provides leadership in areas of research and outreach that address environmental problems and promote a more sustainable society.

The IES administers 3 undergraduate co-majors, 1 minor, and 1 professional master's degree.

Scripps Gerontology Center

Founded at Miami University in 1922, Scripps Gerontology Center is one of the nation's top centers for research in aging. With 19 staff and over 20 affiliated faculty and research fellows, we conduct research that makes a positive difference for our aging population. At Scripps Gerontology Center, we are steadfast in our commitment to impact, innovation, and excellence.

Office of Research and Innovation

The mission of the Office of Research and Innovation is to encourage, facilitate, and support the Miami University community in its effort to obtain external funding for all forms of research, education, scholarly, creative, service, and outreach activities.

Office of Research for Undergraduates

The ORU encourages new students and current students to embrace a desire to engage in research. We are proud to champion the vision, marketing, and coordination of research by undergraduates at Miami with research-active faculty and staff. ORU focuses on sustaining current levels of participation in research and creative efforts, increasing the overall quality of undergraduate research at Miami as evidenced through publications, grants, and fellowships and on broadening participation to students and faculty in all disciplines.

The College of Arts and Science

Representing nearly half of all students, the College of Arts and Science (CAS) is Miami University's largest division and the centerpiece of liberal arts — the wide range of subjects in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities crucial for the development of key professional skills desired by employers.
