Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

These questions and answers aim to provide a high-level overview for individuals, employers, and faculty.

What is professional education, and who is it for?

At Miami University, professional education refers to skills development opportunities available to those looking to gain new credentials to further their success in their field.

Miami's online professional education enables individuals to remain competitive and marketable within the workforce, increasing their chances for career advancement or change. These educational experiences provide the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills, and result in badges of completion or certificates of completion that are shareable with employers.

What's the difference between a certificate and a badge?

Both badges and certificates are records of program completion that can be shared on your resume, online professional profile, or other digital space to demonstrate having completed a course on a specific skill and passed knowledge assessments. Badges and certificates received from taking a Miami Online professional education course are not reflected on official academic transcripts. However, if you took for-credit courses to earn a digital badge (through our microcredential programs), those will be reflected on your transcript.

How long does it take to complete professional education courses?

Our asynchronous professional education courses can be completed at your own pace and remain open indefinitely while you are working towards earning your badge or certificate. That means if you purchase a course but aren’t able to complete it right away, you will be able to come back to it at any time. Our offerings differ in the amount of time it takes a learner to complete a course. Most courses take between 12 and 15 hours to complete, but all learners are different and it may take you more or less time to complete.

Who teaches the professional education courses?

We have partnered with Miami University faculty and alums to bring you various educational opportunities and provide you with the quality and standard you know and expect from Miami University.

Do you receive credit or CEUs for completing Miami Online professional education courses?

No. Miami Online professional education courses are non-credit offerings. CEUs are typically granted by an agency or professional organization–please contact your professional organization to determine if an offered professional education course may be CEU eligible.

Do I need to apply to Miami to be able to take professional education classes?

You do not need to apply to Miami University to be able to take advantage of our professional education offerings. All of our offerings are available as non-degree opportunities. You can follow the steps to register for a course and begin your coursework.

How is the learning experience organized?

Each course is different, and you can read more about the modules included in each course in the professional education catalog. You can expect to watch lectures, read material written by professors and experts, review scholarly sources, and complete knowledge assessments as part of your learning process.

What learning platform do you use?

Miami University uses Canvas as its learning management system. You can access course content, discuss, and complete course assignments on a laptop, tablet, or mobile device. To learn more about Canvas and best practices as a student, visit the Canvas Student Guides.

What is the professional education storefront?

The professional education storefront is a web platform that houses Miami Online courses and programs for non-matriculated learners interested in non-credit courses outside of traditional degree programs. Our digital hub allows individuals or employers to register for courses, complete secure payments, and access Canvas course content.

Do you offer scholarships or fee waivers?

No. At this time, we are unable to offer scholarships or fee waivers for professional education courses.

What is the professional education refund policy?

For asynchronous, self-paced courses, we do not offer refunds. For facilitated courses, please contact ProfessionalEd@miamioh.edu for questions/concerns regarding refunds.

What should I do if I experience an issue or want to provide feedback?

I live outside of the United States. Can I take one of Miami University's professional education courses?

We hope to expand our offerings to include international learners in the future. For more information regarding our international student policy, please contact us at ProfessionalEd@MiamiOH.edu.
