About the E-Fellowship Program

Miami University Regionals E-Fellowship Program Goals

  • Cultivate creativity and knowledge-sharing surrounding the effective use of educational technology in higher education
  • Support faculty pursuits of research grant awards, publications, and presentations.
  • Encourage a collaborative environment that promotes scholarship involving technology and learning
  • Advance online learning at Miami Regionals and demonstrate innovative leadership in online pedagogy and research/scholarship in the online learning community.

Expectations and Deliverables

Faculty expectations

  • After being named an E-Campus Research Fellow, meet the other research fellows as well as the E-Campus Faculty Research Fellow Coordinator
  • Meet one-on-one with the E-Campus Faculty Research Fellow Coordinator to discuss your project plan and timeline as well as assess the resources, including data access you may require
  • Adhere as much as possible to the timeline. If you need to deviate from the timeline, notify the coordinator
  • Complete a Statement of Work (project plan)
  • Completion of the project through one or more of the deliverables described below.

Program deliverables

The program’s research initiative is an opportunity for E-Campus fellows to become familiar with the extensive literature on pedagogical innovation and best teaching practices, and to engage closely with a particular topic of interest in technology integration within higher education. In particular, the research on teaching projects should provide insights on how well a specific teaching approach or method impacts undergraduate learning. E-Campus fellows should reflect upon their past teaching experiences to select a research topic of interest that is specifically related to teaching and scholarship in their discipline, but that can also have repercussions for broader discussions of teaching in higher education. Fellows then consult with the Faculty Fellowship Coordinator, mentors, department faculty, and the Center for Teaching Learning to find resources and develop a unique approach to the issue or problem at hand. Finally, the completed research initiative should result in knowledge that supports online and technology-enhanced teaching and that can be shared with the wider academic community.

Upon completion of the program and service term, E-Campus fellows will develop deliverables as approved in the initial application which includes one or more of the following:

Publication and presentation

Since these projects and courses are experimental, we want you to document and share your experience through formal public discourse. We can find opportunities for you to publish through our channels or we’ll help you find places to publish and present your experience.

Grant-Funded initiatives

Secure funding to formally test, explore, or expand project initiatives is a great way to document and formalize the success of your initiative. We will work with you and the Grants office to identify possible initial or long term funding.

Professional presentations

Sharing what you have (or are) learning about the field is important to you and your colleagues. We’ll help you prepare a training series to deliver for campus and community partners.

Campus connections

Miami Regional E-Campus will help you schedule informal discussion groups, we’ll provide snacks and drinks, and even send one of our Instructional Designers as a backup for the event. Campus Connection sessions are a great way for you to demonstrate service to our University.

Post publication/presentation follow-up

After publication/presentation, notify E-Campus Research Fellows Program Coordinator with appropriately formatted reference(s) and copies of the presentation and/or manuscript. A final report detailing your activities and accomplishments is required to complete the fellowship and release funds.

Impact and Dissemination: Findings and/or programs impact the department, campus, and/ or university and apply to external programs and institutions. Findings disseminated through a regional or national conference and an editorially reviewed publication.

Projects resulting in valuable impacts advancing online learning outcomes for students, faculty, campuses outside of Miami University, supported by data that illustrate impact or quality (e.g. session review survey.)

Impact and Dissemination: Findings and/or programs impact the department, campus, and/ or university and apply to external programs and institutions. Findings disseminated through discipline appropriate peer-reviewed journal.

*For projects involving more than one fellow, the stipend amounts listed above will be evenly divided between/among the collaborators.

E-Fellow project application requirements

  • Clearly stated research topic, problem, and question(s)
  • Clearly stated avenues for disseminating results
  • Clearly stated expected benefits to the field of online teaching and learning, including practical applications and/or grants

Fellow applications or nominations

E-Campus Fellows are chosen through nominations and a competitive review process. We’re looking for creative, energetic, and fearless faculty. Although we ask for tenured and tenure-track faculty, we aren’t necessarily looking for experienced faculty. Each year, we want a healthy variety of Fellows.

Student research associate

Research fellows may also want to invite a student to help in the research process. Note that student research associates must complete IRB training.

Faculty eligibility

Full-time faculty who have taught at Miami for two years (a total of four semesters; if part-time, non-concurrent employment)

E-Fellowship Program Coordinator

Tom Mays, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Commerce, is the E-Fellowship Program Coordinator. Tom earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Ohio University. After receiving graduate degrees from Wright State University, including an MBA and a Master of Science in Social and Applied Economics, Tom earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Dayton. His dissertation was a study of social capital development in post-secondary education. His current research interests include several topics in online learning, including community development and academic integrity.
