  1. Core Courses (6 courses, 19 hours)
  2. Areas of Concentration (5 courses, 15 hours)

Core Courses

Students must take the following core courses. Students must achieve an average GPA of 2.0 in all 5 AMS core courses to successfully graduate with a major in American Studies.

  • AMS 205 - Introduction to American Cultures (3 hours)
    or
    AMS 207 - America: Global and Intercultural Perspectives (3 hours)
  • AMS 206 - Approaches to American Culture (3 hours)

Select 3 of the following 300-level courses*:

  • AMS 301 - American Identities (3 hours)
  • AMS 302 - Immigrant America (3 hours)
  • AMS 303 - Consumer Culture (3 hours)
  • AMS 305 - American Icons (3 hours)
  • AMS 310 - (rotating topics)

*One of the three 300-level courses can, with the permission of the CDA, be an AMS cross-listed course (e.g., AMS/HST/WGS 392, AMS/HST 379).

Take the following course:

  • AMS 401 - Senior Capstone in American Studies (4 hours)

Areas of Concentration

Students must select and take 15 semester hours with at least 12 hours at the 200 level and above, incorporating at least 3 different disciplines, from one of the following areas of concentration:
