Field Experiences

Students experiencing in field work

Geography and planning have always been driven by a spirit of exploration, and are best learned in the field. The Department of Geography at Miami emphasizes the importance of taking learning beyond the classroom.

This spirit of exploration runs throughout the curriculum:

  • Many of our classes, include a strong field research component.
  • All students undertake individualized research in their capstone projects, often in the field. Our "Urban Field Experience" capstone is partially taught in Chicago.
  • We offer a number of service-learning and client-based courses, giving students first-hand experience in a community setting.
  • Departmental funds support eligible student travel and research locally, throughout the United States, and internationally.
  • Our advisors consistently work with students to find study abroad opportunities right for their majors (including our own winter and summer offerings).
  • We seek to connect to connect students to quality field-based internships.

Students can find additional support from Global Initiatives and Community Engagement and Service.
