Safety Procedures
In case of fire or emergency, the following safety procedures are essential to your personal safety, the safety of others and the safety of the residence hall facilities. Specific procedures are discussed in your hall meetings. Fire and tornado drills are conducted from time to time to help acquaint you with the procedures. In addition, the following is important to your safety:
-
During fire alarms you must exit the building immediately. If you do not evacuate, you are subject to arrest and could be cited by The Office of Ethics and Conflict Resolution. Learn the location of all fire exits, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers in your residence hall.
-
The greatest danger in a fire is not from flames, but from smoke. Fire doors in halls and stairways help prevent the spread of smoke and must remain closed at all times.
-
Just remember, don’t take chances with fire! Even a small one can get out of control quickly. If the fire cannot be extinguished with available equipment, leave and close the door to confine it to that room as long as possible. DO NOT LOCK THE DOOR. Activate the nearest alarm and report the fire immediately by calling 911.
-
No matter how small the fire and even if it is extinguished, you must report it to University Police, the Hall Director, or Assistant Director.
-
For fire safety reasons please refer to the list of prohibited items in the Frequently Asked Questions section.
-
Emergency plans are posted throughout all buildings.
- Your student room is equipped with a smoke detector tied directly to the hall’s fire alarm and monitoring system. Most, but not all rooms also have fire suppression (sprinkler head) systems. No items of any kind are to be hung on, from or obstruct the room’s sprinkler head(s). You may be held financially responsible for the repair and clean-up resulting from an unintentional/intentional activation of a sprinkler head.
