Q. When will I find out where I'm living?

A. Housing assignment information will be emailed to your Miami account in late July/early August. Because students sometimes request changes in their Living Learning Communities and we strive to accommodate those requests, we finalize First-Year student assignments after students have had an opportunity to attend the Orientation and Registration Program.

Q. What linens will I need?

A. You’ll need to provide your own pillows, blankets, and sheets (which fit 80” x 36” XL twin mattress). You and your roommate(s) may want to coordinate bedspreads and additional items to decorate your room.

Q. What furniture is provided?

A. All rooms are furnished with beds, dressers, desks, desk chairs, trash can, recycling can, and closets. Bed rails are provided upon request. Due to campus storage space limitations, requests to remove university provided furniture will not be honored. Students are discouraged from bringing their own furniture to campus. Typically, rooms can only safely accommodate the furnishings provided.

Q. What appliances can I use in my room?

A. Approved appliances for use in student rooms include stereos, televisions, computers, fans, clocks, lamps, irons, blow-dryers, curling irons, one-cup contained coffee makers, and microwave ovens (700 watts or less) which carry Underwriters Laboratory approval. Miami will provide power strip(s) in residence halls that have not yet received an electrical upgrade.

Q. What items can I not use?

A. The following items are prohibited in your room: private loft beds, electric blankets and sheets, hot plates, sun lamps, candles, electric skillets and grills, toaster ovens/toasters/popcorn poppers, open hot pad coffee makers, halogen lamps, wireless router, wireless printer, and extension cords.

Q. Can I have a pet?

A. Pets are not permitted in the residence halls, except for small fish. Tank size cannot exceed five gallons, and tank heaters are not allowed.

Q. How large are the residence hall rooms?

A. The size of our rooms varies from one residence hall to another, as a result of architectural differences. You will receive the dimensions of your room when you get your assignment in late July/early August. The majority of rooms are multiple occupancy rooms for two people.

Q. Will I have internet in my room?

A. Yes, each room has both wired and wireless connectivity providing access to the Internet and local network resources. Students who enjoy watching streaming videos in HD (high definition) or who use other applications that require high bandwidths may be interested in an optional service called ResNet Turbo. This service provides a minimum of 3 Mbps Internet bandwidth with service frequently reaching 20 Mbps or greater. This service costs $85/semester. Sign up for ResNet Turbo on your housing contract.

Q. How do I receive mail, and when can items be shipped to my campus address?

A. You may receive mail from two different locations on campus: at the Student Package Center and/or in your mailbox at your residence hall. All letter-size mail, newspapers, and magazines will be delivered to your residence hall mailroom and placed in your mailbox by 8:00 PM each weekday. Any packages, items that require a signature, express mail, or mail that is too large to place in your residence hall mailbox, will be delivered to the Student Package Center, located in Wells Hall. Once a package has been received for you, an email notification will immediately be sent to your Miami email account. After receiving an email notification from the Student Package Center, you will need to bring your Miami ID for identification to the Wells Hall facility, and sign for your package. The Student Package Center is located within the University Mail Services Center and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., for package pickup only. Students may send packages two weeks in advance of their arrival on campus and the package will be available for pickup immediately. Students can also purchase postage stamps, money orders, shipping supplies, and send Express Mail through the U.S. Postal Service at this facility. For more information about mailing services, please contact the University Mail Services Center at 513-529-9221, or email PackageCenter@MiamiOH.edu.

Q. Does the Student Package Center offer delivery service for packages?

A. The Student Package Center does provide delivery service to students living on campus. Students may log into: packagedelivery.miamioh.edu/DeliveryRequest/ to display their package history and select packages for delivery. For a fee, charged to your MUlaa account, the package will be delivered to your room the day after the date of request. You do not need to be present for delivery. If you are not available, Mail Center delivery staff will leave the package with your roommate or in a visible location in your room. An email confirmation will be sent once your package has been delivered. For more information regarding this service, please contact the Student Package Center at PackageCenter@MiamiOH.edu.

Q. Do I need to purchase property insurance?

A. Miami does not assume responsibility for the loss of money or valuables, damage to property, or injuries on the premises. If you are not covered under your parent/guardian homeowner’s insurance policy, we strongly recommend that you make arrangements for insurance protection against such losses, such as renters insurance.

Q. Can I park on campus?

A. A parking permit is required to park on Miami University’s campus at all times. Please contact Parking and Transportation Services at 513-529-2224 or visit our website at MiamiOH.edu/parking for questions about concerning eligibility for or purchasing parking permits.

Q. What if my roommate and I don't get along?

A. Roommate conflicts are mediated by your Residence Hall Adviser and Residence Life staff members, who encourage open communication between roommates to come to a mutual resolution.

Q. How do I hang pictures (posters)?

A. You can decorate your walls using molding hooks (“S” hooks) and twine. Plasti-tac may also be used with the understanding that damage to walls may result. Command Strips, tape, adhesives other than Plasti-tac, tacks, nails, screws, or pins may be used only on bulletin boards and not on the walls, ceilings, floors, window trim, furnishings, or doors. (Students are responsible for damage to the outside as well as the inside of their room doors.) Room decorations should not be affixed to or suspended from the ceiling or light fixtures or sprinkler heads.

Q. Are there elevators in the residence halls?

A. There is a service (freight) elevator in most residence halls. In many buildings, the elevators are only for use by students with a disability or injury or by hall staff.

Q. Where can my parents stay when they come to visit?

A. The Marcum Hotel & Conference Center is owned and operated by Miami University. Located directly on campus, The Marcum offers 55 newly designed and furnished guest rooms and suites, complimentary continental breakfast and all the comforts of home.
