Dietetic Policies and Procedures
Students are encouraged to become student-level members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and the Miami University Student Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND). Student membership benefits include eligibility for AND scholarships and access to valuable student resources for application to graduate programs and ACEND-accredited supervised practice, the Evidence Analysis Library and Tutorial, and other student-level educational resources.
Grade Policy
The Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health Grade Policy students must earn a 2.0 or higher GPA based on the required courses.
Repeating Courses
The undergraduate course repeat policy can be found in the Registration (Undergraduate) section of the Student Handbook. Students are strongly encouraged to visit with an advisor to determine whether repeating a course is advisable. Repeating a course may have an impact on financial aid, insurance, entrance to professional schools, participation in athletics, immigration status, and other matters. Occasionally, students may need to repeat a course because of a low grade. We encourage students to limit the number of classes they repeat.
Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Monitoring Policy
Students who are in the Miami University Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) must meet all the requirements for earning a Verification Statement and all university requirements for a degree completion requirement. Students who do not meet the program requirements with a 75% or above on KRDN assignments may redo the assignment to earn the required minimum grade.
Students will be retained in the Miami DPD program provided the following retention criteria below are met each semester. If not met, they would move to a remediation plan.
DPD Retention Procedures and Policy
Completion of all required courses outlined on the 124 credits Bachelor of Science Degree Curriculum for a Nutrition major with a Dietetic concentration according to the Miami University policies and procedures. Completion of all required courses outlined on the 124 credits Bachelor of Science Degree Curriculum for a Nutrition major with a Dietetic concentration according to the Miami University policy and procedures. The time to completion of an undergraduate degree is four years with a time limit of 10 years as listed in the Miami Bulletin.
The DPD Director monitors, along with the academic advisors, all DPD student grades at the end of each semester to verify adherence to retention requirements. Students are allowed to redo the KRDN assignments as needed to meet (75% or higher) retention criteria.
Students with minimal chances of success in the program will be counseled into alternative academic and career paths. For those students identified as having potential to be successful in the program, a remediation plan will be developed with their advisor.
DPD Assessment of Student Learning and Remediation Procedure and Policy
As an ACEND accredited Didactic program in Dietetics (DPD), it is expected that students will meet each of the 2022 ACEND knowledge requirements.
Students must earn 75% or higher on all KRDN learning activities to earn a DPD Verification Statement. When a student does not meet the KRDNs at the expected level, the student must meet with the course faculty to discuss appropriate remediation to earn a 75% or higher on that assessment before the end of the course each semester. Faculty for each required DPD course will determine the appropriate course-specific remediation approach to use to support student achievement of this requirement. Remediation may not result in a change in grade, but will successfully fulfill the requirement for the DPD Verification Statement. The original grade earned for the activity may stand depending on the faculty member's class policy stated in the syllabus.
It is a goal of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) to retain all students for successful completion of the program and to provide students with the necessary support and services to ensure success in completing the program.
Tutoring is available to all Miami University students across a variety of subjects. Additional information is available at the Rinella Learning Center.
