I would say go for it. There are people here from all over the United States to meet, there are hundreds of student organizations and there's just the perfect amount of students here. Regardless of what you like, you will be able to find a community at Miami.

Babs Dwyer, Advice for Prospective Students

Why Miami?

I looked at universities all over the US including overseas in the UK. From Colorado to Scotland I was determined to get out of Ohio. I ultimately was between St Andrews in Scotland and Miami. With COVID still prohibiting international travel I chose Miami because of their stellar study abroad program thinking I wouldn't like it here. After one day on campus I was instantly in love and haven't regretted my decision once.

How did you choose your major?

I chose political science because I have always been interested in politics and have always dreamed of making a difference and wanted to learn how I can achieve that goal. I took a journalism class for my degree and immediately loved getting to write and report on the news and added it as a minor. I love the overlap of journalism with politics and getting to study both keeps me well informed and also very engaged in current events!

Key Moment at Miami

A key course that helped shape my life was taking POL 241W with Professor Schneider and realizing how interesting government is and how politics and law work together. This class made me so much more determined to become a lawyer, and I now am an Undergraduate Associate for Professor Schneider for POL 241W!

Other Notable Experience

I studied abroad in Spring of 2023 as a sophomore through one of Miami's exchange programs. I was one of two Miami students who chose the University of Glasgow in Scotland and I could not be more grateful for the experience. I became so much more confident in myself and gained worldly experiences. I was able to travel to 10 different countries, make friends with people from all over Europe, and I fell in love with the people of Glasgow. It has by far the friendliest citizens I've ever met. And I now have a goal to someday move back to Scotland because I truly loved it so much.

Advice for Prospective Students

I would say go for it. There are people here from all over the United States to meet, there are hundreds of student organizations and there's just the perfect amount of students here. Regardless of what you like, you will be able to find a community at Miami. And the support I have felt from not only my peers but also faculty to be my best self is something I don't think many people find at other universities.

What are your career goals?

I am aiming to move back to the United Kingdom for a couple of years to work in journalism and media. Then I would like to come back to the States and go to law school with the overall goal of becoming a judge.
