Olivia Lord, Why Miami?

Why Miami?

From the moment I toured Miami, it felt like home. During my orientation I had an amazing conversation with a staff member about the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. I knew that Spanish was something I wanted to pursue, so this was really encouraging.

How did you choose your major?

I have known that I wanted to study Spanish ever since I studied abroad in Peru my junior year of high school. However, History was a recent decision for me. I noticed that out of all my classes, the common factor that I enjoyed most was the history.

Key Moment at Miami

Prof. Jose Amador of the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies really changed my outlook on my education. He made the class so personal and was so encouraging to every single student. He made it a mission to know each student individually and work with them on their strengths. Latin American Studies is not a class I had a particular interest in, but Dr. Amador made it a class that I will remember.

Other Notable Experience

Joining my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, has made such a positive impact on my time at Miami. I have found myself surrounded with girls who encourage me to be the best version of myself, both in my education and personal life.

Another Miami Moment

Joining Sigma Iota Rho has had such a positive influence since I've joined. The career and academic resources I've been exposed to have helped me broaden my idea of what I can do with my major(s). It's also a great experience to be around peers who share my passions. It's also given me several leadership opportunities on the executive board.

Advice to Prospective Students

I would tell them that everyone has a place somewhere in the world, and Miami was mine. From my first day on campus I felt welcomed and appreciated.

What are your career goals?

I am looking to pursue graduate school, and I intend to earn my M.A. and Ph.D. in order to become a professor.

What makes Miami special?

My mom went to Miami, and she was best friends with her roommate. They both ended up having daughters, and we grew up best friends. We both chose Miami, and we ended up being roommates freshman year too!
