Jenna Hughes, Why Miami?

Why Miami?

I chose Miami because they have a strong French program compared to other universities. I knew going to Miami would allow me to study French more in-depth.

How did you choose your major?

I never planned to major in Linguistics or French. I realized towards the end of my senior year of high school that I was very passionate about French, so I made a last minute decision to change my major. I can honestly say that I am so happy that I changed my mind!

Key Moment at Miami

Last spring semester, I took some French classes with Dr. Strauss for the first time. I had to write a French paper every week of that semester, which was really challenging; however, I grew so much in French abilities and was more prepared for study abroad that summer.

Another Miami Moment

My study abroad in France was life changing! I grew so much in my French language skills and learned so much about the French culture. It also made my classes at Miami so much more enjoyable because I could personally connect to the content in my classes since I had been to France and seen the things we were talking about.

Advice to Prospective Students

I would tell them to find experiences or opportunities in college that are important to them. If you are truly invested in the things you are doing, you will not only build your résumé but you will also learn and grow so much.

What are your career goals?

After Miami, I hope to become a high school French teacher. Eventually, I would like to get my PhD so I can do educational research about the importance of learning a second language.
