Center for AI

We support AI work that enhances people's potential.

About the Center

AI is a pervasive, sociotechnical system. People can use it to influence everyday decisions, and it can advance humans' understanding of the universe. AI’s complex—and complicated—qualities mean the Miami Center for AI takes a systemic approach. We support ethical, transformative AI work in research, innovation, and teaching across every division at Miami. We build partnerships on and off campus, offer programming, and help secure funding for work that answers the questions people most want answered.

How the Miami Center for AI serves Miami and its partners Our Objectives

AI and Learning

Help faculty decide how much AI supports learning and develop learning experiences specific to their disciplines.

Research Partnerships

Strengthen AI research collaborations, help teams win external funding, and build lasting partnerships that grow toward an endowment.

Events and Programs

Offer programming and professional development that keep faculty, students, and staff at the leading edge of AI and prepare students for the workforce.

National Collaborations

Connect Miami with industry, community organizations, and regional stakeholders for AI work.

Advisory Boards How the Center Works

Two advisory boards guide the Center’s work. An internal advisory board brings together representatives from every Miami division, along with members from IT Services, the University Libraries, and the student body. It reviews major initiatives and partnerships and shares Center news across campus. A national advisory board of AI leaders from outside Miami will provide perspectives from industry and practice. Both boards are now forming.

Lenses on AI

The Lenses on AI show where this work applies across Miami’s disciplines. We invite exploration that builds understanding, and understanding comes from seeing from many perspectives. Each of the 14 Lenses on AI examines an area where AI is changing how people live, work, and think, and each ends with a question worth exploring. Together, they show how AI work is happening at Miami and help the Center offer balanced programming and pursue promising partnerships. Whether you are a researcher, teacher, student, or partner, try on a lens, or combine several, to spark collaboration and deeper study.

Arts

Visual and performing arts, creative writing.

Artists, writers, and performers interpret human experiences and shape culture. As AI is increasingly used to simulate craft, how can the arts lessons of authenticity and authorship shape cultures’ priorities?

Discourse

Journalism, news, and social media.

Reporters and everyday posters define what’s important and what news people talk about. How do people decide what to believe when AI tools can filter conversations and produce images and text that seem real?

Engineering

Software, computing, and the built world.

Engineers invent tools and systems people depend on. How can builders make AI products more capable that remain reliable, safe, and easy to use?

Enterprise

Business, entrepreneurship, and the workforce.

One-person startups and multinational corporations alike turn business ideas into products, services, and jobs. How is AI influencing the businesses people build, the work they do, and the customers they serve?

Entertainment

Sports, popular culture, gaming, and live events

Creators, performers, and athletes bring fans together and create one-of-a-kind experiences. What happens to those meaningful connections when entertainers use AI to create the moments fans love?

Environment

Energy, sustainability, and natural resources.

People are part of ecosystems, and their decisions affect these systems in various scales and time horizons. How will communities balance AI’s environmental costs against its potential to help protect the places we all live?

Everyday Life

Home, relationships, and personal routines.

Daily routines are full of small choices, from parenting and relationships to meals and money. What kinds of lives will people live when they invite AI to assist with those activities?

Governance

Public policy, law, and regulation.

Governments, institutions, and companies are setting guardrails for AI development and use in real time. What policies and standards will keep AI's use accountable to the people it affects?

Health

Medicine, biotech, and wellness.

Healthcare providers treat patients and researchers seek breakthroughs for healthier lives. What role should AI take in people’s care today and in future health innovations?

Learning

Education, skill-building, and cognition.

Whether in a classroom or for a hobby, people of all ages develop skills through practice and feedback. When does AI help people develop, and when is it best to learn without it?

Science

Physical, life, and earth sciences.

Scientists work to explain how the natural world works and how humans make sense of it. What scientific discoveries will AI bring into reach,  and how will scientists keep results reproducible?

Security

Cybersecurity, fraud, and national security.

People and organizations depend on systems that protect information, assets, and critical infrastructure. When AI powers both attackers and defenders, how can defenders keep up?

Society

Culture, communities, and shared values.

Over time, a community’s cultural norms develop, as do moral codes that guide how people perceive and treat one another. What will communities decide is acceptable as AI is part of how people belong and connect?

Transcendence

Faith, religion, and the human spirit.

Across traditions, people seek meaning beyond the everyday to find their place in the universe. As AI seems more humanlike, how will people make sense of what makes us human and their relationship with the unseen?

Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Miami Center for AI. We were established in 2026 as a hub for AI work at Miami and a starting point for partnerships beyond campus. We complement the centers and divisions that already offer AI programming and resources, and we look for gaps we can fill together. Our mission—to support AI work that enhances people’s potential—drives everything we do, including how I lead. Members of the Miami community can book Open Hours with me, and anyone, including partners and funders, can reach out at aicenter@MiamiOH.edu.
